Working out together may be beneficial to your waist line

There may be an answer to losing weight - working out with your partner.

A new study has revealed the effect that working out with a partner can have on a person's physique, and the effects are good.

The research revealed that those who workout with the aim of shedding pounds successfully lose up o twice the amount of weight when working out with their partner than those who workout alone.

According to the research, those who worked out with a partner/spose had lost the highest amount of weight, averging at 8.2 pounds.

The average breakdown of weight loss across respondents, according to their exercise partners, was revealed to be as follows:

1)      Exercised with partner/ spouse- 8.2 pounds average weight loss

2)      Exercised with personal trainer- 5.9 pounds average weight loss

3)      Exercised alone- 4.1 pounds average weight loss

4)      Exercised with family member- 4.0 pounds average weight loss

5)      Exercised with friend (s)- 3.9 pounds average weight loss

Those who exercised with friends were found to lose the least amount of weight, whilst those who worked out as a couple were found to lose the most.

When asked what they believed was most beneficial about the way in which they worked out, the majority, 61%, of those who worked out with a partner/ spouse stated that ‘pressure from partner contributed to more successful workout.’ 30% claimed that ‘wanting to look good for partner makes me work harder.’

However, when asked what they felt was most detrimental about working out in their chosen way, the majority of those who worked out with their partner selected ‘pressure from my partner to work above my capabilities’; whilst those who worked out with friends claimed to dislike ‘chat getting in the way of a successful workout'.

Sarah Bailey of UKMedix.com, who conducted the research, commented on the findings:

“Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to encouraging a successful workout, but it seems that those who work out as a couple are a whole lot more successful than those who go it alone- or even those who take their mates along. Partners can be more forthcoming about pushing you to your limits, something which may indeed help to reach weight loss goals quicker, as opposed to friends who are happy to chat whilst you work out. It seems that anyone who really wants to lose weight should grab their partner and leave their friends at home!”
