Millions of Brits admit they are so clueless about gardening they have to rely on mum and dad to make sure their backyard looks presentable and doesn’t resemble an overgrown jungle with weeds instead of flowers.

That’s according to a new study released today which shows that a third admit they are lacking in confidence when it comes to knowing what’s what in the garden.

One in five say they need help with cutting the grass, weeding and even digging the flowers beds and bizarrely – one in twenty even need help arranging the garden ornaments.

So stumped by our outside oasis, the research revealed that more than half of us now regularly stand at the kitchen window on a weekend and watch mum or dad toiling away at the lawns or flowerbeds.

Almost one in six say they leave everything to their folks as they are happy to do it, while a quarter of those who get help from parents muck in too but leave mum and dad in charge.

One in ten is happy to delegate gardening duties to their parents simply because they are better, but two-thirds felt confident that their horticultural skills would improve with age.

The study by weed killer firm Roundup found that in fact, the typical adult doesn’t ‘get the hang of’ gardening until they reach the ripe old age of forty.

However, 70% of the adults polled said they think settling down and starting a family kick starts an interest in gardening, with one in six saying it was so their back garden was a pleasant area for their kids to play in.

And with summer on the way, now’s definitely the time to get cracking on your backyard, so where can you go to find out some cheap tips for getting your dodgy lawn into pristine condition, advice on when to prune trees and spray weeds, how to prepare your flower beds, plant veggies and get everything looking good for warmer weather?
