Christmas is an excellent time to revaluate what you have in your decoration collection. As you bring down your baubles and tinsel from the loft or out of the garage, you can examine each piece before you decide whether it makes the cut for another year. Here are some things you might want to say goodbye to this time around:

Minimalism on Female First

Minimalism on Female First

Anything that is past its best: If you find anything that is broken, tatty or that has perished while it’s been in storage- these are the easiest things to begin with as they are no longer functional.

Anything that no longer goes in your home: If you redecorated this year and find that some of your items no longer go with the new colour scheme- this is the perfect opportunity to pare down those items to only the ones that complement your new room.

Residual items: If you have a couple of dogeared cards from last year’s pack, some tags that are no longer flat or the dregs of some old wrapping paper hanging off a tube- these are easy wins as they are no longer fit for purpose and aren’t part of a set.

Things not all the family agrees on: If you value what your family thinks about your décor during the festive period- take into account what they love and what they aren’t so enthusiastic about. If you all agree on certain items no longer bringing you joy- that is a clear sign they need to go.

Things you think you should put up: But don’t really want to. If you don’t see any point in hanging a wreath on your door or you despise the look of tinsel in your home- get rid of these traditional items if you really don’t like them. It’s your home- only put up what you think is beautiful.

Anything that you have an excess of: If you have too many baubles to fit on your tree or more lights than you can shake a stick at- see if anyone else is in need of these items and try and pass them on. You don’t need multiples of everything for that ‘just in case’ moment.

'Just because' decorations: If you have anything that has no memory attached to it- and you bought it just because it was Christmas and it has a tedious link to something in your life- remove these items and leave only the ones that are truly sentimental. The ones that your children have made, ones that are personalised, ones from your travels and ones that have a happy memory attached to them are the pieces that should take centre stage.
