One in 10 adults (13%) have given a spare key to their neighbours, with 17% of people who haven’t given their neighbour a key sayings it’s because they don’t know them well enough With recent findings also showing that social interaction is declining in the UK with two thirds of adults experiencing loneliness, a little more interaction with your neighbours could go a long way!

Connecting with your neighbours doesn't have to be difficult. Here are five tips from The Big Lunch on how to get to know the people on your street:

Five ways to get to know your neighbours better

Turn small talk into big talk

Whenever you see one of your neighbours, why not stop for a chat? A quick 'How are you?' or 'Lovely weather!' today could lead to a deeper friendship tomorrow.

Lend a helping hand

Ever wished there was someone nearby who could water your plants or look after your pet when you're away? Offer to do this for your neighbour and they'll no doubt be happy to do the same for you.

Organise a get-together

Who doesn't enjoy taking time out for a cuppa and a slice of cake? Even better if you can share it with your neighbours. Go big with a street party or just invite your nearest neighbours to a small bash at home.

Discover a common interest

Could your street be full of keen gardeners, yoga experts or fans of fiction? Set up a club or society and invite everyone to join in.

Get involved in Neighbourhood Watch

Are you worried about crime and anti-social behaviour? Find out if your street is part of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme - if not, you could start one yourself.
