If you have already decluttered your home and feel comfortable with your space, be careful, as things can come creeping back in without you really noticing. If you’re unsure if your stuff is getting the better of you again, here are some signs to look out for.

There is more coming in than going out: If you adopted one in an one out rule initially but this has gone sideways, it might be time to refocus. If you feel there is more coming into your home than there is leaving it, now is the time to put some plans in place. Nip it in the bud now before it gets worse and go back to your known problem areas- whether that is post, clothing, accessories, books or toys.

You haven’t decluttered in a long time: Keeping on top of your space is an ongoing process. A large purge is not the end of the story, I’m sorry to say. It requires constant reassessment. So if it’s a while since you gave up some of your belongings, it might be time to do it again and commit thereafter to once a quarter, once every six months or once a year to keep things in order.

Your jobs are getting on top of you: If you find that cleaning your home is becoming increasingly hard, it could be because you have to move more stuff to get to the dirt. Similarly, with tidying- if it’s taking you longer and longer at the end of each day to put things away- maybe you have too many things again and it’s time to reduce them back down to a more manageable level.

Your shopping habits are creeping back in: If you are spending most of your free time seeking out new things- perhaps you need to focus on what you already have and reducing that before you bring anything new into the home. Perhaps you already have something that would suffice, or maybe you already have something similar that you never use- so it makes no sense to buy another.

Relationships are at breaking point: Perhaps you have started fighting with a member of your family or partner again about stuff. If things are putting a strain on your relationship with those you love, it’s time to remove the source of the problem. The things that are getting between you- they simply aren’t worth wrecking your home life over.

You have less and less money each month: If after decluttering you found more money in your bank account because you were buying less stuff perhaps you need to revisit those statements if your bank account isn’t looking all too healthy right now. It’s possible you are shopping out of boredom, convenience or to distract yourself from something else that is going on, resulting in lots of things entering your home. If this sounds familiar, perhaps you need to reset and minimise once again to remind you why you were doing it in the first place.
