The fashion industry is understandably obsessed right now with reviving the coolest trends of the Nineties.

But however chic the clothes might have been back then, they came hand in hand with some seriously dodgy hair and make-up looks.

Here are just a few that we were all likely guilty of…

As much as you may want to forget the ill-advised trend for sperm brows, the pictures live forever. Just take it as a warning to never, ever over-pluck your eyebrows again.

2. Tendrils in our hair

Why did we insist on ruining a perfectly nice ponytail or bun by carefully extracting two tendrils of hair to frame our face?

It seems as though everyone today is a professional make-up artist thanks to the sheer amount of YouTube tutorials you can follow along to. However, in the Nineties, we would grab a black eye pencil, rub it along the bottom of our lids and call it a day. It was basically the half panda look – or sometimes full panda if we decided to go all-in – and back then we were pretty impressed with our make-up prowess.

Naomi Campbell said in a recent interview with Allure: "I think I can honestly say, in the '90s and first started working, I wore so much make-up my first five years of modeling." It certainly wasn't a decade to shy away from the 'more is more' approach, and this was particularly the case with the trend for frosted lips. It wasn't a low-key look, the rule being: apply tonnes of frosted lipstick – often in pale pink. It would end up a strange combination of shiny and matte.

This leads us on to the other frosted Nineties disaster: frosted tips. We blame Justin Timberlake in his NSYNC days for bringing this monstrosity to the masses.

7. Blue eyeshadow

Blue eyeshadow is a beauty trend that resurfaces time and time again. In-keeping with the liberal approach we had to make-up in the Nineties – which is strange considering the fashion was so minimalist – the style was to apply as much blue eyeshadow on your lids and around your eyes as possible.

8. Chunky highlights

While the Nineties certainly had its fair share of dodgy make-up trends, it's fair to say there were more hair-related abominations. Chunky highlights involved streaking your hair with thick sections of a much lighter colour, leaving you with a two-tone zebra look.

Strangely enough, chunky highlights seem to be making a comeback thanks to the likes of Dua Lipa and Kim Kardashian. Let's hope they don't dive deeper into the world of Nineties beauty trends and decide others are worth reviving as well…
