These foods and supplements can help keep your skin clear

We all know the saying, You Are What You Eat, and that couldn’t be more true, but have you ever considered the effect your diet has on your skin?

Natalie Balmond, founder of purepotions – a new skincare range that is 100% natural with certified organic ingredients, shares her tips about what we should be putting IN our bodies...

Foods That May Help

VEG - Generously: low in calories. Rich in fibre, vitamins, minerals.

FRUIT - Liberally: protect you from illnesses, provides antioxidants to help prevent free radicals.

FISH - Regularly: fish is rich in good oils and essential fatty acids (EFAs) - a top of the line nutrient dense food. Substituting fish for meat is one of the best dietary changes you can make

CARBS - Averagely: provide the body with the fuel needed for physical activity and organ function.

DAIRY - Sparingly: provides calcium which prevents osteoporosis, may reduce the risk of cancer and the risk of high blood pressure.

MEAT - Sparsely: meat is a good source of protein but should not be eaten too often.

SWEETS - Hardly: we all need a treat sometimes, but limiting sweets and artificial foods in our diet is important, especially to maintain healthy skin

ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS
Omega-3, 6 and 9 are essential fatty acids (EFAs) that humans need for good health. They are considered useful for such complaints as high blood pressure and cholesterol but most importantly here, for improving the symptoms of severely dry skin. Here are some great sources.

Hemp Oil
This oil has the perfect ratio of omega 3 and 6 which matches the balance required by the human body. Just over one teaspoon a day easily provides your human daily requirement of EFAs. This is why we use it in our salves! People with severe skin rashes have been found to be lacking in essential fatty acids and the Omegas can limit water loss in skin cells.

Flax Seeds
Flax Seeds have been found to be very high plant sources of Omega-3, eaten whole or ground, they also provide gentle fibre.

Chia Seeds
Another seed, recently sold in this country, are Chia seeds. These are a good source of iron, calcium and protein as well as a steady supply of energy which can be helpful if your blood sugar is unsteady. Soaked for a few minutes, these tiny seeds can be used for baking or mixed into cereals, desserts, salads and smoothies.
