Despite the lack of sun we see during the winter, it is still there and so are its UV rays. The rays from the sun still have an effect on our skin; we just can't necessarily see them. The rays can cause wrinkles; discolouring of the skin that is exposed to the sun during the day and these rays even cause your blood vessels to dilate under your skin, which makes the skin appear red and blotchy.

To prevent this from happening, here are a few tips to help you out:

The number one prevention is to wear sun cream with an average SPF factor. If you're exposed to lots of UV rays then the higher the SPF you wear the better protection your skin will have. One product I will always suggest is Heliocare 50 SPF (£17.50) for the summer months and 30 SPF for during the colder months. Both at an average price of

Even though there is sun in the winter, the wind is still out too, which also has harsh effects on the skin. The wind can cause our skin to crack, especially on our hands, as they're more likely to be exposed to harsh conditions. Using a moisturizer twice a day, in the morning and night, as well as during the day keeps your body hydrated, soft and prevents the wind from drying out your skin. One hand moisturizer I recommend is the OPI Nail Avoplex High-intensity Nail and Hand Cream (around £17) because it is extremely nourishing and leaves your skin feeling soft and smooth.

Carrying around a lip balm is always a good idea throughout the winter to prevent your lips from drying out and cracking, which can be extremely painful as they're open wounds. Just like sun cream, lip balms with SPF factors in them are ideal for better protection from harsh weather conditions.

Balms and creams such as the Natura Bissé Lip Recovery Balm (£42) is high end but it does the job. It saves your dry and flaking lips and soothes them back to health and, more importantly, protects them all day from the weather conditions.
