Zoe Saldana shares the beauty tips passed down from her mother

Zoe Saldana uses organic beauty tricks passed down from her mother and has shared her favourite ones.

The 'Avatar' actress was presented with a handwritten book of DIY hair and skincare recipes lovingly compiled by her mum when she was younger, which she still swears by to this day.

She told the debut issue of People En Espanol's Chica magazine: "Everything was organic and stuff that we already had in the kitchen."

Zoe, who was recently unveiled as L'OREAL Paris' lastest spokesmodel, shared some of her favourite homemade haircare treatments with readers, including a moisturising avocado hair mask.

She explained: "Overripe avocados are perfect. You mash them up with a little olive oil, and let the mixture sit on your hair for 30 minutes. It makes me hungry, so I usually end up rinsing it out too soon."

The 35-year-old actress loves having shiny locks, so washes her hair with vinegar every few weeks to restore its vitality and natural gloss.

Zoe said: "Once a month I rinse my hair with white vinegar and warm water to restore the pH balance to my strands."

The star also divulged some more unconventional tips picked up from growing up in the Dominican Republic, including lightening her hair with rum.

She revealed: "I did this as a girl when I was living in the Dominican Republic. You soak hair with rum, then go out in the sun."
