Carey Mulligan In Pride and Prejudice

Carey Mulligan In Pride and Prejudice

Carey Mulligan has become one of the most in demand actresses in the last twelve months since she burst onto the screen with An Education.

She is back this week as she teams up with Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield in a big screen adaptation of Never Let Me Go.

So to celebrate the release we take a look at Mulligan's very varied career.

Pride & Prejudice

She kicked of her career in her late teens when she landed the role of Kitty Bennett in Joe Wright's adaptation of Pride & Prejudice.

It was to be her debut big screen performance as she joined the likes of Keira Knightley, Matthew Macfayden and Donald Sutherland on the cast list.

The movie was both a critical and commercial success as it went on to pick up nominations at the Golden Globes and the Baftas.

Bleak House

But Mulligan didn't stay in movies as she moved onto TV - landing a string of roles and enjoying major success.

Her most famous part came in another book adaptation as she played Ada Clare in the Charles Dickens' Bleak House.

She went on to land a string of other TV roles including Waking The Dead, My Boy Jack and Northanger Abbey.

Doctor Who

She went on to gain more attention when she played Sally Sparrow in the Doctor lite episode Blink in season 3.

The ballsy character of Sally was an instant hit with fans - many calling for her to become the permanent companion.

Her performance and the episode itself was a highlight of the third season.

An Education

And while she may have been a hit in Doctor Who it was really for her performance in An Education that was to be her major breakthrough.

Directed by Lone Scherfig the movie, which also starred Peter Sarsgaard, Alfred Molina and Dominic Cooper, was a coming-of-age story about a teenage girl in 1960s suburban London, and how her life changes with the arrival of a playboy nearly twice her age.

And she has dominated the awards circuit as her performance winning Best Actress for British Independent Film Awards, National Board of Review, Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association and the Chicago Film Critics Association Award.

She was also nominated for a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and a Bafta award and an Oscar nod for Best Actress.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps

With An Education under her belt Mulligan had grabbed the attention of Hollywood and she starred in her first big American movie last year  - Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.

The movie saw Oliver Stone return to the director's chair and Michael Douglas to the role of Gordon Gekko - twenty three years after the original.

Mulligan took on the role of Winnie Gekko in the film, which also starred Shia LeBeoug and Josh Brolin.

Never Let Me Go

The adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's novel sees Mulligan reunite with Keira Knightley as well as Andrew Garfield.

As children, Ruth, Kathy and Tommy, spend their childhood at a seemingly idyllic English boarding school.

As they grow into young adults, they find that they have to come to terms with the strength of the love they feel for each other, while preparing themselves for the haunting reality that awaits them.

Never Let Me Go is released 11th February
