Keira Knightley As Elizabeth Swann

Keira Knightley As Elizabeth Swann

We have already taken a look at Keira Knightley’s rise to fame as she returns to the big screen this week in London Boulevard.

We haven’t seen her since her performance in The Duchess but teams up with Colin Farrell for the new movie from William Monahan.

So to celebrate the release of the movie we take a look at the Keira Knightley we take a look at which films of her really should be into your collection.

- Bend It Like Beckham

Bend It Like Beckham, which was directed by Gurinder Chadha, was the breakthrough film for Knightley as well as Parminder Nagra and Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

Released in 2002 the movie follows Jesminder Bhamra who has no interest in Indian tradition and wants to play football.

With a little help from Jules (Knightley) Jess joins and all girl team coached by Joe, (Meyers) and the pair soon find themselves vying for his attention.

The movie was a critical and commercial success as it took $50 million at the box office, not bad for a movie made on $6 million.

- Pirates of the Caribbean

But it’s her role as Elizabeth Swann that really put her on the map as she teamed up with Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom.

The original movie, which was released back in 2003, was based on a theme park ride and was considered a disaster before it even made the big screen as the pirate movie had struggled at the box office in the past.

But Curse of the Black Pearl bucked that trend and went on to become one of the most successful franchises of all time; Dead Man’s Chest broke the $1 billion barrier.

- Pride & Prejudice

In 2005 Pride & prejudice saw Knightley team up with filmmaker Joe Wright for the first time as he made his directorial debut with a big screen adaptation of the Jane Austen novel.

Knightley takes of the role of heroine Elizabeth Bennett in the film, a performance which brought her rave reviews and well as a Best Actress Oscar nomination.

The movie was a huge success and was praised for the way that it stuck to the original tale. It cemented Knightley as a leading lady and Joe Wright as a one to watch filmmaker.

- Atonement

But it was Atonement, which once again reunited her with Wright, that cemented her as a real leading lady as she took on the role of Cecila Tallis.

Knightley finally made her claim as a serious grown up actress shaking off her young girl roles, her Pirates tag and silencing her critics in just one stroke.

She delivers a controlled performance as the emotionally repressed Cecilia, who shows her emotion only once in the library scene with Robbie.

-The Duchess

She followed this up with another great dramatic performance as she took on the role of Georgiana Spencer, the duchess of Devonshire, in The Duchess.

Keira Knightley really has found her niche in the corset movie as, like Pride and Prejudice and Atonement, she delivers a stunning central performance as the fragile Georgiana who is so desperate for any shred of love that will come her way.

Knightley portrays Georgiana as a strong woman who deals with and survives all that life throws at her including her husband's affairs which leads to him openly have a mistress (Atwell) living in their home to her doomed affair with Earl Grey.

London Bouelvard is released 26th November.
