Michelle Obama in Jason Wu at the inauguration ball last night

It was arguably the most anticipated event in fashion history yesterday, and Michelle Obama did not disappoint the style critics, as she put on a glittering display at her husband's inauguration.

She has been hailed as a style icon many times over, after her outfit choices on the campaign constantly made the headlines, and since then her every move has been watched by the fashion pack.

Throughout the campaign trail, she was always noted for wearing bright colours to make her mark and it proved to be a refreshing change from previous first ladies and their lacklustre style.

This was a lady that the fashion world could get on board with, and as such a style storm brewed up with designers submitting their work left right and centre for Michelle to wear.

Everybody from Christian Dior and Thakoon to Maria Pinto had been lined up to dress her for the inauguration, but in the end Michelle chose Isabel Toledo for the swearing-in ceremony at noon yesterday.

It was an elegant choice for the new first lady and she certainly looked the part as she strolled through Washington. Teaming an all yellow ensemble with green shoes and gloves was a very brave move and it paid off; the style critics loved it.

Mrs O, as always was ahead of the trends by picking the colour of the season and working it to the max. Her jewel encrusted coat could have been perceived as too over-the-top, but by keeping the rest of the outfit simple and understated, she looked nothing less than classy.

Toledo has become something of a favourite with Michelle since she first came to the public's attention, and its likely this latest creation will be flying off shelves when it hits US store Barney's in March.

After her first outfit of the day was given the thumbs up, all attention turned to her outfit for the inauguration ball; would it match our exceedingly high expectations?

Of course it would. Looking stunning in a one shoulder floor length white gown, Michelle dazzled next to her husband as they shared a dance or two on the world's centre stage.

Something which is arguably impressive on Mrs O's part, is the fact she chose a little known designer to represent her, in possibly the most important night of her life.

Clearly putting her faith in Jason Wu was a smart choice, as the embellished floral details on the dress was a nice touch to what could have been a very plain gown.

The asymmetric design was a great choice too, as its very 'on trend' this season and wasn't too flash for the occasion; it was simply beautiful and Obama seemed to agree as he remarked to the crowd: "Isn't my wife good looking?" Aww...

We think they make a very attractive couple indeed, what do you think?
