Emma Roberts looks beautiful wearing Lanvin

There were plenty of beautiful gowns on display at the Golden Globes last night, held at the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel, and of course black dresses were featured heavily on the red carpet.

The surprising thing though, they weren't ad boring as you'd expect them to be. Each black dress had an interesting twist to ensure they caught our eye.

Here are some of our favourites.

Of course Style Queen Cate Blanchett, who never really gets it wrong on the red carpet, looked beautiful in an Armani Privé Fall 2013 Couture tulle and lace gown.

It was dramatic and bold and Cate, who won Best Actress for Blue Jasmine, carried it off with ease and grace. The blackless design, with daring plunge ensured this piece was certainly not one-note. Diamond Chopard earrings commanded as much attention as the dress and her faux-bob completed the look perfectly.

Lizzy Caplan was another favourite, with something a little different to every other gown we saw on the evening. The actress chose a black Emilio Pucci Spring 2014 column gown with beautiful embellished sleeves that gave off a stunning Art Deco feel.

Elsa Pataky, on the arm of her handsome husband Chris Hemsworth, covered up her baby bump in a black Paule Ka dress with front split and embellished halter detail, drawing the eye away from her stomach, you have to look twice to see that she actually is pregnant.

Whilst Julia Roberts did impress us with her black Dolce & Gabbana gown with embellished waist band, we do wish she had left the white shirt at home, it managed to turn the look 'mumsy'. Without it, it would have been perfect.

Only someone with Uma Thurman's stature could have carried off her custom Atelier Versace gown with halter style top and mermaid hem skirt.

Amy Poehler chose a beautiful Stella McCartney custom dress, the assymetrical neckline gives the dress an interesting touch.

Sofia Vergara changed things up on the red carpet last night, the Modern Family actress who usually sticks to mermaid shape gowns chose a stunning Zac Posen ball gown with fitted bodice and full skirt. She contrasted the dress with a stunning turquoise necklace from Lorraine Schwartz.

Julianna Margulies was looking radiant in a stunning Andrew Gn black gown with cap sleeves and plunging neckline. The gold embroidery added a elegant touch to the look.

Jessica Chastain, who you can always gaurantee to bring the glamour, looked incredible wearing a custom Givenchy by Ricardo Tisci strapless gown. The sweetheart neckline looks beautiful on Jessica and the string of diamonds only adds a further chic touch.

Allison Williams also went for a black dress, hers from Alexander McQueen with a black and white fur detail bust, an interesting choice that certainly paid off.

Finally, Emma Roberts. One of our favourites of the evening. Her Lanvin black gown certainly made her standout, the fitted gown with a dramatic mermaid hemline and a interesting neckline. A slicked back hairstyle and turquoise earrings completed her look.

Who was your favourite out of the black dresses?
