Try ice-skating for free

In the winter months it's difficult to find motivation to hit the gym and the cold gloomy weather means you're not really feeling like piling layers of clothes on to go for a jog.

But, it's still important to exercise and not let yourself become a couch potato (though it is tempting). And you can't use the excuse of having no money because it's just been Christmas, we've found easy ways to get you motivated without spending any pennies.

Walking
The easiest form of exercise, walking every day is a simple way to get physically active and it doesn't cost a thing. Even though it's freezing outside, wrap up warm and persuade your parter or friend to join you for a winter walk. Power walking will increase your heart beat and you won't feel the cold as much.  If it snows, take full advantage of the beautiful scenery and go for a family stroll in the snow, or have a play around with your kids in the nearest park building snowmen. If you're feeling brave, dig out some old trainers and go for a run, you'll feel the benefits.

Trying to fit walking into your everyday routine is also easy and will keep you fit. It's recommended you should be walking 10,000 steps a day, so instead of driving to the supermarket, if it's close enough, walk there for a change.

Play out
Kids are bursting with energy and always running around playing outdoor games, why not join in with them? You'll be suprised how tired you are after frantically running around playing tag or stuck in the mud with them for half an hour.

Home workout
Lend a fitness dvd from the local library or from a friend. This way you don't have to leave the comfort of your own home whilst exercising. Memerise the routine and when you have to give it back, continue working out at home listening to music, remembering some of the steps and exercises you've learnt. Devise your own home workout such as running up and down the stairs or using soup cans or bottles as weights. There's loads of free exercise tips and clips on the internet which demonstrate different muscle exercises and stretches you can do at home.

Check your local council website to see if they're running any activities over winter to get fit for free. There might be a local ice rink where you can have a session ice-skating. There's often taster sport sessions and classes you can attend for free and if you find one you really enjoy, it might persuade you to take it up full time in the new year.
