Louise Roe hosts the MTV series Plain Jane

Season 2 of Plain Jane is currently showing now on MTV each Tuesday night, for anyone who hasn’t seen the show, what can they expect?

In a nutshell, it’s like a Romantic Comedy movie in an hour. It’s so adorable. The premise is definitely a make-over but it’s kind of deeper than that. It’s more about giving a girl with very low self-esteem confidence in herself and at the end of it she goes on a blind date with a guy and we see what happens.

What happens in this season that we haven’t seen before?

I think the places we go are far more exotic and exciting. We’ve been husking sledging in the Arctic Circle, we’ve been to Marrakesh and just to some incredible locations so visually it looks amazing. And of course there are lots of fab dresses and high heels. Lots of tears and lots of laughter – it’s amazing.

On to fashion then, which are your favourite trends for the season?

Texture. It’s all about a lot of lace, a lot of leather, a bit of velvet – although I’m not so sure about velvet trousers off the runway, they’re not very flattering. I’ll stick to velvet tops and scarves. Burnt Orange is definitely my new ‘red’ for Christmas. I always invest in a really great red piece for Christmas because I think it’s such a fab colour for the season, but actually this year I’m going for a pumpkin orange instead.

What items can people buy to instantly update their look for the new season?

First of all take everything out of your wardrobe and have a look at what you’ve got, because you forget which pieces you have in there. Re-evaluate everything and invest in pieces like a really cool chunky necklace, a bright belt, or a bright clutch, even a new pair of shoes. Everything but clothes, you can revamp what you’ve got.

Coats are important when winter hits, but a lot of people forget to see their impact. What shapes have your attention this season?

I agree with you, I see so many black and grey coats, but there are so many gorgeous bright and printed coats out there. I would go for a print. Some have beautiful metallic thread, paisley or winter florals or even graphic prints if you like that Sixties vibe. I think it’s important to get a coat that fits you in at the waist if you are that hourglass or pear-shaped figure. So something that has a bit of a Mad Men vibe. But I’m also a real fan of the cape, I’ve recently bought one myself.

Ignoring all of the fashionable trends, what are your favourite classic pieces that we should all invest in?

I’m a real fan of maxi dresses. In LA the weather is quite hot and it’s the easiest way to stay cool. I wear a lot of maxi dresses with wedges – which is obviously a summer thing, perfect for LA. I’ve got this pair of red leather trousers, that I know are on-trend at the minute, but I’ve had them for a while. I wear them with the loosest t-shirt and a really scruffy ponytail and it’s really cool to mix high-and-low like that, I really like to do that.

The party season is about to hit us, what’s your fashion advice?

I actually think less is more. There should only be one Christmas tree in the room. People tend to really over-do it with the sparkle and the sequins for Christmas. As Coco Chanel said, before you leave the house take a look in the mirror and take one thing off. I love leather trousers, skinny ones, I think instead of doing a dress either leather trousers or a cool suit. I wore this real ly cool purple suit from Theory the other day and I know a lot of high street are doing printed blazers. If you don’t want to do the whole suit you can just do the printed blazer with jeans. I kind of like that menswear vibe, it’s a bit different you know than a fluffy dress.

You do a lot of work with E! on the red carpet, whose red carpet style always leaves you envious?

I absolutely love Kate Bosworth, she never puts a foot wrong and she supports up-and-coming designers too, which I love.

Whose style would you like to make a couple of tweaks too?

I think probably Kesha, she needs a bit refining.

Finally, what beauty trend are you loving this season?

I love a red/orange lip, MAC does one called Morange and that’s amazing. I think if you do that and don’t do an eye and then a real coral cheek that looks fab. Actually the other lip is the oxblood, dark red lip that can be very vampy and sexy. See which red suits you.
