The creative director of the Spanish brand is reportedly in talks to renew his contract but his future there remains uncertain.

A spokesperson for Kering, the holding company which owns Balenciaga, and the 31-year-old fashion designer told WWD: "There are discussions between the designer and Balenciaga regarding the renewal of the contract".

However they refused to discuss the "likelihood of an agreement".

The brand has gone from strength to strength with Alexander - who took over from Nicolas Ghesquière in 2012 - and CEO Isabelle Guichot at the helm.

Just last March he said: "I feel we're already a globally recognized house, and a top luxury leader. We're well on our way."

However, it's thought the designer - who also presides over his own eponymous New York-based label - could be finding juggling the two roles challenging.

Alexander - who has also produced a collaboration line with H and M - recently opened up about his decision to embark on a career in fashion and revealed he turned to creating clothes because he didn't like sports.

He said: "There's no, like, my mum was a seamstress, or anything like that.

"I never really played sports after school like the other kids did. So instead I discovered fashion and magazines, and I kind of filtered everything through that. Even then, I knew fashion wasn't just about designers. I loved Japanese street style magazines, and I was a big fanatic over models. I can still remember how excited I was when MTV did a show, 'A Day in The Life of Gisele', or something."
