Where do you look for fashion inspiration?

Finding your own personal style can take years, and plenty of fashion mistakes will be made along the way, to help guide you along your path we spoke to leading British fashion stylist, Rachel Davis.

Rachel has worked with the likes of Elle Macpherson, Daisy Lowe,

Rachel Davis shares her advice

Kelly Brook and Dannii Minogue, working alongside some of the top photographers in the industry including Annie Leibovitz – so it’s safe to say her opinion counts.

Now she is working with TK Maxx on the Me. By Me. Project. Rachel says:

“I’ve worked with TK Maxx for years and I genuinely love the brand. As someone who loves to experiment with style it really suits me as there’s something for everyone at TK Maxx.

“The Me. by Me. campaign is about encouraging people to experiment with style, try new things on and to simply be themselves. The campaign features real TK Maxx shoppers and I think this is a really positive message in fashion.”

When it comes to finding your own personal style, Rachel suggests the following:

  1. Instead of trying to follow unrealistic ideals, we should try to find the styles that work for us as individuals and truly embrace them. You don’t have to try and emulate a celebrity, take inspiration from real people you find stylish, like the cast of TK Maxx’s Me. by Me. campaign.
  2. Create a mood board of looks you like and work out why you like them.  Instagram and Pinterest are great for this!
  3. Don’t be afraid of change!  Take small steps and try one thing at a time.  You don’t have to change your entire look overnight, have fun and try new things.
  4. If you don’t feel good you won’t look good, so it is so important to feel confident in what you’re wearing and make sure it is a comfortable fit.
  5. Look back at photos where you are wearing an outfit you felt great in and take inspiration from the elements that made you feel special.

She also answered some more fashion questions, sharing her opinion on fashion trend, updating your look on a budget and getting ready for autumn – it’s unthinkable in this heat, we know.

What are your opinions on fashion trends?

As a stylist I love fashion and I get so overexcited each new season.  Fashion trends are great for opening your mind to new things but it’s important to retain your individual sense of style. If you buy into a trend make sure it’s ‘you’. Know yourself and what suits you.

Which style staples should all women invest in and have in their wardrobe?

A white shirt is so versatile and infact I prefer a man’s one.  Wear with boyfriend jeans and killer heels for effortless chic, or over a shift dress to mix up the look.

Jeans.  I am addicted to jeans.  Quality is the key here; it’s an item worth investing in so get a good brand. If you’re on a budget, TK Maxx is the perfect place to shop as they have a fantastic selection of high quality designer brands for up to 60% off the RRP. This season my essentials are indigo, shredded and boyfriend as well as the classic skinnies.

Killer heels.  You need one pair in your wardrobe you can put on to instantly feel like a million dollars.

What are your tips for updating a look on a budget?

Look in your wardrobe and see what staples you have and how you can update them.  Consider what items you can buy that fit with your current clothes rather than feeling the need to start from scratch each season.

You don’t need to pay full price for designer clothes. Bargain hunt at TK Maxx to add designer label clothing to your wardrobe at up to 60% off the RRP. With these discounts, you can afford to update your wardrobe for less.

Accessories are a great way to update your look, if there’s a trend for pastels you don’t need to buy a whole new pastel wardrobe. Instead, think of a simple clutch or pair of heels for a subtle nod.

Before we know it summer will be over and we’ll be getting ready for the autumn, what tips do you have for women to transition their wardrobe into the new season?

I’m a firm believer that you don’t need a whole separate wardrobe for autumn if you dress in layers.  I will wear a summer dress teamed with woolly tights and a boyfriend cardigan.   Look for quality knitwear pieces and boots to update your look.

Accessories are a great way to move into the new season, I have an amazing faux fur stole from TK Maxx’s Mod Box department which has really updated my look and I wear it year after year.

Don’t skimp on quality- some cheap clothing is OK but for knitwear it’s important to have good quality that will last both through the season and washes.
