Most people live with more than they need- so today, on National Give Something Away Day- it’s the perfect opportunity to readdress the balance and give something to those who need it most. Here are just a few ways you can pay it forward…

National Calendar Day on Female First

Donate to your local charity shop- Do a sweep of your home and box up anything that is clearly not bringing any value to your life. Take the bag that’s been sitting by your door that you’ve been meaning to donate for a while, clean out one of your rooms, drawers or cupboards and see what you can find them send it on to your local charity shop.

List something for free- If you have something that you would like to donate and don’t desperately need the money you would get for it- offer it for free to someone who is willing to come and take it off your hands.

Donate to your local food bank- Most people have things in their cupboards that they know they aren’t going to eat. If this sounds familiar, take everything out of your space that is still in date and donate it to your local food bank. If it’s closed- there are usually drop off points at your local supermarket.

Donate to charity- Which is your favourite charity? If you have one- send them some money out of the blue or do your research and find a charity that is close to your heart and give them a boost to their funds to continue their good work.

Volunteer- Gift your time rather than your things. If you look online, you will be able to find a list of local places that accept volunteer help. Find one that you think you could be of the most help to and offer your services today and in the future if you can afford the time.

Donate to your local library- Any books lying around that you will never read, already have or aren’t to your taste? Bundle them up and take them to your local library so others can enjoy the experience of reading them.

Gift something to friends or family- Offer to make a meal for your nearest and dearest and let them eat on you. Do you have something they would find useful? Take it to them so they don’t have to make the purchase themselves. Pick some flowers from your garden and take them to your mother or grandmother to brighten their day. Gift something to someone you’ve been promising them for a while like a good book, a DVD or a recipe.

Donate blood- If you are already on the register- arrange your next visit. If not- now is the time to sign up and find the next available appointment so you can join the thousands of people who save lives each year.
