Online shopping is due to be huge again this Christmas. Predictions are that we will spend £13.8 billion pounds online as we try and make our gift buying less stressful.

93% of all online fraud is experienced by home Internet users, so Symantec has come up with some top tips to make sure we don’t fall foul of online fraudsters this year.

We think the following tips will help your readers shop safe:

1) Look for the padlock! All secure Internet sites display a padlock at the bottom of their screen declaring that it is safe to shop

2) Use a credit card instead of a debit card when making purchases. Most credit card companies offer insurance on all purchases and there’s no chance that fraudsters could use the details to access your bank account, unlike a debit card

3) Check that you have solid Internet security software protecting your PC. Visit www.symantec.com/en/uk/norton/themes/familyresource/ and watch the easy to understand videos which will help you choose the right one for you

4) Never click on URL links from unknown sources asking you to verify personal information, especially if they claim to be from your bank or building society – this is a type of fraud known as Phishing
