Drivers will be banned after two convictions if they exceed the speed limit by 15 mph in urban areas or 25 mph on motorways, under a shake-up of road safety laws.

The Department for Transport is expected to announce long-anticipated changes in penalties for drivers caught speeding next month with publication of a consultation document.

Currently drivers caught speeding receive three penalty points on their licence. However, the new rules will see penalties gradually increase the greater the speed the driver is clocked at.

It means, for example, that drivers will get six points on their licence if they are caught travelling at 45 mph in a 30 mph zone, 55 mph in a 40 mph zone or 95 mph on motorways.

Simultaneously, ministers will also announce proposals to toughen drink-driving rules and a £60 on-the-spot fine for careless drivers, and tighten legislation to ensure higher conviction rates for drug driving.

This will send shock waves of alarm through to motorists Where I am all for tackling speeding offenders and applying zero tolerance instead of pussy footing around, here begs the question what if you are caught speeding by the cameras at say 2.00 am in the morning when there is no traffic around?

I say bin the cameras, put out a special police traffic division that will be financed by the real offenders spot fines as they whiz past a school at high speed narrowly missing the poor old lollipop lady.

Then they deserve to be banned.
