Ford Fiesta ecoBoost

November 2013 a group of journalist were invited over to Cologne to visit the fiesta factory to see how this super car is made.

The award was presented to the COO of ford Europe Barb Samardzich were the fiesta is solely made, but what I didn’t know was that to make a fiesta from sketch to final production takes 4 years of planning developing and testing,to get to the final product.

We met the design team behind the Fiesta, how they design the outside and then the interior how they target the buyer, the fiesta team showed us that the fiesta isn't just designed for women but for men also.

What mums want are family friendly trendy and stylish cars, the younger urban professional women are more interested in the exterior the style and appearance, its compact size and easy to drive, but men are more interested in performance, fuel consumption durability and the engine design.

We had a tour of the site at Merkenich, which was just huge we were able to see how the cars are made from start to finish, roll and rolls of sheet metal being moulded in to bonnets bumpers sides panels and then robots putting them together was incredible to watch it was like something out of transformers, and then the final stages were the work force take over to complete the car , at Merkenich it takes approximately 13 hours to build a fiesta from start to finish, and the site produces 1650 daily but it has the capacity to produce 1800 when require.

we were given a unique opportunity to see the acoustics room

At various stages of production the cars are tested, we were given a unique opportunity to see the acoustics room and how images show how the sound of a door slamming affects the car and were the impact of that sound is strongest. then we felt the vibration and sound on an empty car shell and how it affected the body work and what the design team do to stop the effect with padding, all of this so when you're driving your car and noise and vibration from the engine, music system or outside is kept to a minimum, and then we walked into the wind tunnel which was massive to see the aerodynamics of the car, we were able to do this ourselves which was really interesting .

The wind tunnel to see the aerodynamics of the car

Since the beginning in 1976 fiesta have sold over 15 million cars it’s was the best-selling B car in Europe since 2009. I was given the fiesta titanium x 5 door for a week, and I can totally understand how it won female car of the year 2013 , its one of those cars that is really enjoyable to drive, holds the road really well and considering it is a 1 ltr man has it got umph and it handles the road with ease and the stop start function saves on fuel. , it’s a fun drive, as a mum of four children we all fit in with plenty of room the seat design and the interior makes the car seem bigger, Its dash board with its functions are clearly displayed on screen and you can access many of them via toggles on the steering wheel too, with its sporty feel leather trimmed seats makes you feel in total control and a range of technologies will make your drive even more exciting.
