To say that comedy movies were a bit rubbish in 2011 is a bit of an understatement, they were absolutely shocking if we are being perfectly honest.

However 2012 is already promising to be better as the very funny 21 Jump Street has hit the big screen.

Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) are more than ready to leave their adolescent problems behind.

Joining the police force and the secret Jump Street unit, they use their youthful appearances to go undercover in a local high school.

As they trade in their guns and badges for backpacks, Schmidt and Jenko risk their lives to investigate a violent and dangerous drug ring.

21 Jump Street is laugh out loud funny, and it's been a while since I have been able to say that about a comedy movie.

Tatum & Hill are perfectly cast as Jenko ad Schmidt and there is a real bromance going on here that is so fab to watch.

However there is also a competitive streak between the pair and that makes the relationship more complex and interesting.

There is a clear bond between the central actors and there is a very genuine feel to their on screen relationship, it never feels fake or forced.

They compliment each other perfectly; the high school jock and the nerd who find that they have more in common than they thought and develop a friendship that they perhaps they didn't expect.

Ice Cube is also superb as the foul mouthed Captain Dickson, head of the Jump Street department - he has the vast majority of the best and rather foul-mouthed lines.

The movie never takes itself too seriously and it addresses, very early on, that it is a remake of a TV show and there are some great nods to that throughout the movie.

But this is not simply a re-hash of that series this is an original re-imagining that has it's own identity.

There is also a superb cameo from Johnny Depp, 21 Jump Street is the show that made him a star.

21 Jump Street looks set to be one of the funniest movies of 2012 as it blends the comedy and action elements so well.

The movie really shows how a remake can be done and it showed much more imagination and flair than some of the original comedies.

Miss 21 Jump Street at your peril as this is a movie that really will have you laughing in the aisles.

21 Jump Street it out now
