The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 hits the big screen this week and to celebrate we are looking at some of the biggest franchises of all time.

Today James Bond is under the spotlight as the second most successful film series of all time.

2012 sees James Bond celebrate it's 50th anniversary and with twenty five films in that time the movie has grossed in excess of $5.5 billion at the global box office.

However that is a total that is set to go just one way and that is up as Skyfall is breaking every record.

The twenty third Bond movie has already grossed in excess of $518 million in the couple of weeks that it has been on general release.

Casino Royale is currently the biggest grossing movie in the series on $599 million but that looks set to be comfortably surpassed by the latest instalment.

Bond hit the big screen for the first time back in 1962 when Sean Connery uttered those famous word 'Bond, James Bond' for the very first time in Dr No.

Connery was the first of six actors to take on the role of 007 with George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig all carrying on the great tradition.

Connery's Dr No, From Russia With Love and Goldfinger got the ball rolling while Moore is the longest serving actor in the role with seven movies under his belt.

The character has undergone some changes over the years from suave and debonair spy to all out action hero.

Daniel Craig took over the role of 007 back in 2006 and immediately made his mark with Casino Royale.

While Quantum of Solace was a blip script wise the franchise is back on form with Skyfall - which is widely regarded as one of the best.

Bond 24 and 25 are set to go ahead with Daniel Craig expected to reprise the role for both of those films.

James Bond is a franchise that is still flying high after fifty years as the team behind the movie continue to find way to reinvent the character.
