"Chernobyl Diaries" is a chilling original story from Oren Peli, who first terrified audiences with his groundbreaking thriller, "Paranormal Activity".

The film follows a group of six young vacationers who, looking to go off the beaten path, hire an "extreme" tour guide. Ignoring warnings, he takes them into the city of Pripyat, the former home to the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor, but a deserted town since the disaster more than 25 years ago.

After a brief exploration of the abandoned city, however, the group soon finds themselves stranded, only to discover that they are not alone...

The chilling setting of the abandoned town of Pripyat provides a unique backdrop for this terrifying horror, so we wanted to look at some of the best famous haunted places in film.

- Pennsylvania  

Home to numerous horror films including Night of the living dead and Dawn of the dead. In Dawn of the Dead we see Pensnylvania as host to a zombie epidemic. 

The effects of an unknow disease causes the dead to rise from the resting grounds and feast on living human flesh. This apocalyptic town, in a mass hysteria of rabid corpses is not somewhere to plan your summer vacation.  

- Wolf Creek, Australia

A hell hole, right in the middle of paradise. When warned about the dangers of travelling alone through the Australian outback , take note!

If not you could end up like the back packers in this film who end up in Wolf Creek. After mysterious happenings drain their car and phones of battery, they are ‘rescued’ by an Aussie trucker who takes them to stay at his for a night of wicked er... fun . 

- Eel Marsh House.

Going to stay at the house, lost in the fog, which all the local villagers fear is a great idea, right?

Apparently so, according to Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe) who arrives at the house after huge struggle and uncountable please not to go. Even when paranormal activity with in the house reaches terrifying levels Kipps is determined to stay until he finishes his work.

It isn’t until he sees the ‘Woman in black’ and as a result the village children, one by one start dying from unnatural events that he starts to reconsider his stay. Moral of this story, do not go to Eel Marsh house, or in fact any house which the villagers plead you not to enter!

- The Cabin, Tenessee, Evil Dead.  

Doubt sets in your mind pretty quickly when you see a film where a  group of youngsters head off for a vacation, in a cabin, in the middle of the woods. God help the unlucky souls, who turn up at this particular one!

Shortly after arriving the friends find a ‘Book of the dead’, they also find a tape recorder which has readings from the book within. It just so happens that they play an incantation, realising evil spirits to reek havoc on them. Aswell as being attacked by demons, possessed and attacked by their own body parts, a girl is raped by the surrounding ‘possessed trees’.

- Elm Street, springwood, Ohio

The setting of the film franchise ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ in which the kids of the street are haunted in their sleep by the disfigured dream stalker Freddy Kruger. The mass murder kills them in their sleep using his bladed glove which results in their real life deaths.

After rumours that Freddy (The school care taker) has been doing nasty things to children in the basement enrages the parents of Elm Street, and they seek revenge by burning Freddy to death.

It is this act which transforms him into a dream stalker, full of anger and with plans of revenge where he can attack kids where their parents have no hope of saving them. Both the parents and Freddy are reasons to steer clear of this street, what goes around comes around.   

- 112 Ocean Drive, Amityville.

A real haunted house, which has inspired numerous books and films since the tragic event in 1974 where Ronald DeFeo, Jr. shot and killed all six members of his family in the house, initially denying it, but later admitting being guilty yet claiming legal insanity.

Retelling the story of the 28 days the Lutz family spent living in the house 5 years after the murder. 

Almost immediately after moving in paranormal activity can be identified. Objects moving around the house, dark messages being left, the acquisition of a dead girls teddy. Blood starts seeping from the walls and the family discover bodies hidden inside the walls. 

Father, George (Ryan Reynolds) becomes depressed and angry, with obvious hatred towards the family he once adored, supposedly being possessed and begins chasing them with a shot gun. They manage to get away from the house, therefore escaping the spirits, but they left all their belongings and never returned.

The Chernobyl Diaries is in cinemas June 22nd
