Have you noticed how female characters have been changing in recent years? Gone are the blonde, and sometimes a bit dim, rom com types replaced instead with the more quirky indie girl.

Yea the indie girl is taking over the big screen, in a good way of course, bringing with it a whole new type of leading lady. She's beautiful yet sassy, strong minded and smart throw in a sprinkle of quirkiness and this is the type of character that we have been seeing in recent times.

Yes the Lost actress is just the latest star to take on this slightly off kilter leading actress role with her new movie Remember Me, which also stars Robert Pattinson.

She plays Ally Craig in the movie, who witnessed the murder of her mother as a young girl. She becomes the love interest for Tyler (Pattinson) who plans to date her and then dump her to get back at her father, who is a cop.

But as Tyler gets to know Ally her quirky ways, she eats her dessert before her main course in case she should die before finishing her meal without having had the thing she wanted the most!, he begins to fall in love with her.

- Ellen Page: Juno

Ellen Page shot onto the acting scene back in 2007 with the comedy drama Juno, which was directed by Jason Reitman.

Juno is a a whip-smart teen who is confronting with an unplanned pregnancy. Juno may seem wise beyond her years, but after sleeping with classmate Bleeker (Michael Cera), the pregnant teen quickly realises how little she really knows about life.

And while many would be filled with horror at what lies before them Juno confidently makes the decision to have the baby and give it up for adoption.

The teenager goes on a journey of self discovery making adult decisions, learning what she wants in life as well as learning about the importance of family, friends and love along the way.

It's not just the boys, mainly in the form of Woody Harrelson, that are killing zombie and appearing to be having a great time in the process as Wichita is just as good a shot as any guy.

Survival and protecting her younger sister Little Rock is the only thing on the mind of Wichita in the action packed Zombieland.

And the cunning and sassy Wichita is going to survive no matter what... she and her younger sister trick Columbus and Tallahassee out of their guns and their ride by pretending that Little Rock is about to be turned into a zombie.

But she's not all fluttering eyelashes as she kicks some serious zombie butt. But there are many layer to Wichita that Columbus begins to break through.

- Kat Dennings: Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist is a comedy follows two people thrust together for one hilarious, sleepless night of adventure in a world of mix tapes, late-night living, and, live, loud music and Kat Dennings teams up with Michael Cera.

Dennings takes on the role of Norah Silverberg, the teenage daughter of a wealthy record producer. She keeps her cards very close to her chest because wannabe musicians see her as the chance to get into the music industry.

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist is a journey of self-discovery as two teenagers, both with very different attitudes on love and relationships, figure themselves out, what they want and are willing to give into love and let someone else in.

- Kristen Stewart: Adventureland

The actress took five minutes out from the Twilight whirlwind, where she plays Bella Swan just in case you didn't know, to take on a more low key role in Adventureland.

Stewart takes on the role of Emily "Em" Lewin, a worker at Adventureland theme park. Em has a troublesome home life; angry at her father for marrying so soon after the death of her mother as well as hating her stepmother.

Other actresses who have taken on more off the wall characters include Natalie Portman in Garden State, Zooey Deschanel in 300 Days of Summer.

Remember Me is released 2nd April.
