The Other Boleyn Girl

The Other Boleyn Girl

What makes a great movie? A well written and compelling script, a director that knows what they are doing and a talented cast right?

This week's Synecdoche New York brings together the talents of Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, Michelle Williams, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Samantha Morton.

But FemaleFirst takes a looks at when a really great cast makes a really rubbish movie.

Oliver Stone returned to the director's chair in 2004, after a five year hiatus, with Alexander, based on the life of Alexander the Great.

He assembled a great cast of Colin Farrell, Val Kilmer Jared Leto and Oscar winners Angelina Jolie and Anthony Hopkins but the film was a disaster.

It only just made back it's $155 million budget grossing over $167 million at the global box office. As well as failing with the cinema going public the movie was also met with mediocre reviews from the press.

It also came under fire from historians due to factual errors in the movie. Alexander was nominated for six Razzies, including Worst Picture.

2004 also brought another poor movie, despite a great cast, in the form of Troy, loosely based in Homer's Iliad.

Wolfgang Petersen, the filmmaker behind the likes of Das Boot and In the Line of Fire, was in the director's chair and he brought together an impressive cast of Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom, Peter O'Toole, Brian Cox, Sean Bean and Diane Kruger.

With a budget of $180 million Troy is one of the most expensive movies ever made it did go on to gross over $497 million at the global box office.

However the disappointing $50 million opening in the US and poor reviews resulted in the movie not being as successful as expected, despite the talented cast.

Brad Pitt is back for Ocean's Twelve which was, let's face it, just plain rubbish, which was surprising after the success of it's predecessor Ocean's Eleven.

George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts and Andy Garcia all returned to their roles with Catherine Zeta Jones joining them for the first time.

The $450 million gross of Ocean's Eleven made a sequel inevitable but the naff script made the film a disaster, Julia Robert's character pretending to be Julia Roberts what?

Despite the poor reviews fans of the actors kept the faith and it made a respectable $362 million.

The Other Boleyn Girl is one of the more recent movies to have a great cast put was pure rubbish. Eric Bana, Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman and Kristen Scott Thomas all came together to tall the story of the Boleyn sister's relationship with Henry VIII.

The major problem with this film is you always knew the ending Anne loses her head, it's like watching Titanic it was always going to sink!

The love triangle at the height of Henry's power that caused him to split from the catholic church, causing decades of religious unrest, has been degraded to a soap opera.

Other movies that had an impressive acting line-up but turned out below par include Bobby, King Arthur, The Village, Bonfire of the Vanities and Be Cool.

Synecdoche New York is released 15th May
