Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2

These week sees one of the biggest and best love franchises comes to a close as The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 2 is the epic conclusion to the Twilight series.

The Twilight Saga is just one of the big franchises that have entertained audiences over the years - many of those movies coming in more recent years.

So to celebrate the release of the final Twilight film we are taking a look at some of the biggest film franchises of all time.

Unless you have been asleep for the last decade it will not surprise you to know that the biggest film franchise of all time is Harry Potter.

The eight movies over the last ten years have made an eye-watering $4.7 billion at the global box office - not to mention made household names of it's young cast.

When J. K. Rowling's novels took the world by storm it was only a matter of time that the books were adapted for the big screen,

And it was 2001 when Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone hit the big screen and we were introduced to Daniel Radcliffe for the very first time.

The fresh faced youngster had landed the biggest role in film and it was to be a role that changed his life and launched his acting career.

Emma Watson and Rupert Grint were cast as Hermione and Ron and they too were to see their stars rocket.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone captured the imagination of the cinema-goers and the film went on to take in excess of $974 million at the global box office.

Philosopher's Stone was to be the biggest grossing film in the series until Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 brought the series to a close last summer.

But from 2001 the movie got bigger and bigger and darker and darker as audiences flocked to cinemas in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009 2010 and 2011.

Of course the movies weren't always a critical success and some of the movies criticised for veering away from the books - but when the lowest grossing film in the franchise takes a mammoth $796 million you know you are doing something right.

A decade after Radcliffe, Watson and Grint played Harry, Hermione and Ron for the first time the franchise was brought to a close in spectacular fashion with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2.

The film was the only one in the series to break the $1 billion barrier as the movie went on to take in excess of $1.3 billion worldwide - making it the fourth biggest movie of all time.

The Harry Potter series enthralled audiences of all ages for a staggering ten years as it brought in some of the finest directing and acting talent that this country had to offer.

And while the movies may no longer been on the big screen they will be entertaining kids for years to come.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 is released 16th November
