Jason Reitman

Jason Reitman

Jason Reitman is quickly becoming a director to keep an eye on with his latest movie Up In The Air that has been the talk of the awards season so far.

But does Reitman have a serious Oscar chance?

Yes the filmmaker is back this week with Up In The Air, which stars George Clooney, Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick.

With a job that has him travelling around the country firing people, Ryan Bingham leads an empty life out of a suitcase, until his company does the unexpected: ground him.

Up In The Air has been grabbing a lot of awards and nominations over recent weeks and is the hot favourite to find itself in the Oscar mix.

The movie won gongs at the National Board of Review, Washington D.C. Area Film Critics, New York Film Critics, and the Florida Film Critics as well as bagging five Golden Globe nominations.

Yes the film is the runaway favourite to pick up Best Picture Drama at this weekend’s ceremony with George Clooney and Reitman also picking up nominations for Best Actor and best Director.

But this isn’t the first time that Reitman has had a movie that has been a major hit with the critics as Juno was an indie hit in 2007.

The little independent movie that follows a teenage girl who falls pregnant became the talk of tinsel town and led to a string of Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.

While the movie and Reitman missed out on taking home movie’s biggest prize Juno did bag the Best Original Screenplay prize.

So here Reitman is again his movie being the talk of Hollywood and most people’s favourite to scoop the major prizes over the next few weeks.

But with tough competition from the likes of The Hurt Locker. Avatar, Inglourious Basterds and Precious the movie is facing some tough competition.

But with the likes of Reitman and George Clooney coming so close to the big awards in the past this time around both of them may find Oscar night to be a huge success!

Up In The Air is released 15th January.
