Emilio Estevez & Martin Sheen

Emilio Estevez & Martin Sheen

On Friday, 13th May the inspirational new film The Way starring Martin Sheen and directed by his talented son Emilio Estevez hits cinemas.

In The Way, Martin Sheen plays Tom, an American doctor who comes to St Jean Pied de Port, France to collect the remains of his adult son, killed in the Pyrenees in a storm while walking The Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of St James.

Driven by his profound sadness and desire to understand his son better, Tom decides to embark on the historical pilgrimage, leaving his 'California bubble life' behind.

Armed with his son’s backpack and guidebook, Tom navigates the 800km pilgrimage from the Pyrenees, to Santiago de Compostela in the north west of Spain, but soon discovers that he will not be alone on this journey.

While walking The Camino, Tom meets other pilgrims from around the world, all broken and looking for greater meaning in their lives: a Dutchman (Yorick van Wageningen) a Canadian (Deborah Kara Unger) and an Irish writer (James Nesbitt) who is suffering from a bout of 'writer’s block'.

From the hardship experiences along 'the way' this unlikely quartet of misfits create an everlasting bond and Tom begins to learn what it means to be a citizen of the world again, and discovers the difference between 'the life we live' and 'the life we choose'.

To celebrate the film’s release in cinemas we take a look at other famous family duos in Hollywood . We start, of course, with the films by the Sheens and Estevezs.

The Sheens

Bobby (2006)

The Way combines the directing skills of son, Emilio Estevez and acting skills of father, Martin Sheen.

This isn’t the first time they have collaborated with each other on a film project. In the 2006 film Bobby, they collaborated when Estevez directed his dad Sheen (and a host of top Hollywood talent) in the story of the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy.

In 1987, Martin Sheen also played a blue-collar working class father to Emilio’s younger brother  Charlie Sheen in Oliver Stone’s Wall Street.

The Hitchcocks

Alfred Hitchcock was no stranger to making cameos in his own films, but when it came to his 1960’s thriller, PSYCHO he not only made an appearance, but he placed his daughter Patricia Hitchcock as Janet Leigh’s plain-Jane assistant.

Now that’s putting your child first!

The Hustons

Angelica Huston won her Oscar for best supporting actress in Prizzi’S Honor (1985) which was directed by her father, Jack.

Jack Huston also directed Angelica’s grandfather Walter to Oscar glory in The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre (1948).

Angelica’s half-brother Danny Huston is also a famous actor, having starred in The Aviator, The Constaht Gardener and Clash Of The Titans.

These days Angelica’s nephew Jack is currently starring in HBO series Boardwalk Empire. Quite the family!

The Stillers

Ben and Jerry Stiller are the father- son duo who gives us a great laugh in their collaborations.

In 2001, Ben directed the comedic movie, Zoolander about a model who at the end of his career is brainwashed by his manager played by Ben’s real father, Jerry Stiller and Will Ferrell’s character, Mugatu.

When this father-son duo gets together it maybe enemies on screen, but no matter their roles, it’s all family all the time!

The Smiths

Although Jaden Smith is only 12, he has already topped the Hollywood box office starring with his famous papa, Will Smith in the 2006 film, The Persuit Of Happiness.

Jaden and his father again collaborated in 2010 with The Karate Kid, but this time Will stayed behind the scenes as producer leaving Jaden to soak up the spotlight as the main character, Dre Parker.

This power father and son will continue to dominate the charts with their wide range of talents and refuse to be outdone.
