Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon is one of the most liked and successful actresses working in Hollywood at the moment - having proved she can tackle many genres and winning an Oscar in the process.

This week sees her take on an action/comedy for the first time as she teams up with Chris Pine and Tom Hardy for This Means War.

So to celebrate her return to the big screen we take a look back over her career and pick out her best characters & performances.

- Annette Hargrove - Cruel Intentions

It was back in 1999 when a string of early roles brought her some critical success.

One of those roles was Cruel Intentions, a modern take on Dangerous Liaisons that teamed her up with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe.

The role of Annette Hargrove was a great introduction to the very charming Miss Witherspoon as she was more of a match for Sebastian throughout the movie, making him fall in love with her when that wasn't really his plan.

That same year she went on to find success with Best Laid Plans and Election.

- Elle Woods: Legally Blonde

But it was the role of Elle Woods that she her find success on a global scale as she showed off those comic skills for the very first time.

Elle Woods is a character that you cannot help but fall in love with as her wit and charm makes her endearing to all.

The movie took $141 million worldwide and announced Witherspoon's arrival as a force to be reckoned with.

- June Carter: Walk The Line

And a force to be reckoned with she proved to be in 2005 when she took on the role of June Carter in the superb Walk The Line.

This remains Witherspoon's great role and finest hour as she embodied Carter body and soul, also showing off her vocal talents.

There was great chemistry between Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix but this was a no nonsense performance from the actress that earnt her a well deserved Oscar.

- Isabella Field El-Ibrahimi: Rendition

She tackled the political thriller in 2007 as she joined the all star cast of Rendition.

It is a powerful and emotional performance by Witherspoon as she desperately tries to find her husband Anwar El-Ibrahimi, who disappears on a routine flight.

The movie tackled the subject of a controversial CIA practice called extraordinary rendition, as well as the fear of terrorism after 9/11.

- Marlena: Water For Elephants

Water For Elephants was the only movie for Witherspoon last year as she starred alongside Robert Pattinson and Christoph Waltz.

The movie was an adaptation of Sara Gruen novel and Witherspoon looks stunning in it from start to finish.

This is a beautiful movie about forbidden love and a love against all odds - it's a sweeping romance that just carries you away.

Marlena is trapped in a troubled marriage and it's a controlled performance from Witherspoon as you never really see just how bad things are for her.

- Lauren: This Means War

This week sees her take on the role of sassy Lauren who finds things go way out of control when dating two CIA agents at the same time.

FDR and Tuck: two of the world’s top secret agents and best friends, who never let anything come between them - until they inadvertently fall for the same woman.

Now, it’s all-out war, as the two spies battle each other with high-tech surveillance, advanced tactics, and an arsenal capable of bringing down a small country.

This Means War is released 2nd March
