Snow White and The Huntsman

Snow White and The Huntsman

We have all grown up with fairy stories such as Snow White and Sleeping Beauty but it seems that these stories are becoming hugely popular in Hollywood.

It seems that 2011 has been the year of the movie influenced by the fairy story - and there are more on the horizon.

So with Sleeping Beauty hitting the big screen this week we take a look at the fairy story based movies that have been released this year as well as what is ahead.

- Snow White and the Huntsman

Filming is now underway on Snow White and the Huntsman as Kristen Stewart leads an all star cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron and Sam Claflin.

There is more emphasis on the relationship between Snow White and the Huntsman than we have seen in previous telling's of this story.

Ian McShane, Eddie Izzard and Bob Hoskins are just some of the actors who have been cast as the Dwarves.

Snow White is the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen (Theron) who is out to destroy her.

But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the one girl threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Hemsworth) who was dispatched to kill her.

- Sleeping Beauty

Emily Browning is back on the big screen this week as she leads the cast in Julia Leigh's directorial debut.

The Australian filmmaker has put a darker and more erotic twist on a popular tale - the film has already been causing a stir on the festival circuit.

Death-haunted, quietly reckless, Lucy is a young university student who takes a job as a Sleeping Beauty. In the Sleeping Beauty Chamber old men seek an erotic experience that requires Lucy’s absolute submission.

This unsettling task starts to bleed into Lucy’s daily life and she develops an increasing need to know what happens to her when she is asleep.

Haunting and provocative, Julia Leigh’s powerful vision is one of the most startling debut features of recent years. Featuring a fearless performance from Emily Browning, Sleeping Beauty is set to be one of the year’s most anticipated and celebrated releases.

- Beastly

Earlier this year Alex Pettyfer teamed up with Vanessa Hudgens for a modern day telling of Beauty and the Beast.

Directed by Daniel Barnz the movie was loosely based on the novel of the same name by  Alex Flinn.

Kyle Kingson has it all - looks, intelligence, wealth and opportunity - and a wicked cruel streak.

Prone to mocking and humiliating "aggressively unattractive" classmates, he zeroes in on Goth classmate Kendra, inviting her to the school's extravagant environmental bash. Kendra accepts, and, true to form, Kyle blows her off in a particularly savage fashion.

She retaliates by casting a spell that physically transforms him into everything he despises. Enraged by his horrible and unrecognisable appearance he confronts Kendra and learns that the only solution to the curse is to find someone that will love him as he is.

- Red Riding Hood

The story of Red Riding Hood was another fairytale that was adapted this year as Catherine Hardwicke returned to the director's chair for the first time since Twilight.

Amanda Seyfried lead an all star cast that included Gary Oldman, Billy Burke and Julie Christie in a story of forbidden love and terrible secrets.

Valerie, a beautiful young woman torn between two men. She is in love with a brooding outsider, Peter, but her parents have arranged for her to marry the wealthy Henry.

Unwilling to lose each other, Valerie and Peter are planning to run away together when they learn that Valerie's older sister has been killed by the werewolf that prowls the dark forest surrounding their village.

For years, the people have maintained an uneasy truce with the beast, offering the creature a monthly animal sacrifice.

Father Solomon is called in to help them kill the beast but he warns that it could be any of them.

- Untitled Snow White Project

There isn't just one Snow White project in production with Tarsem Singh at the helm.

Oscar winner Julia Roberts is set to play the Evil Queen while Lily Collins has landed the role of Snow White.

A dark twist on the classic fairy tale, in which Snow White and the seven dwarfs look to reclaim their destroyed kingdom.

- Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

Finally Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is another fairytale based movie that will be heading to the big screen in 2012.

Directed by Tommy Wirkola the movie is set years after the traditional Hansel and Gretel story with Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton in the lead roles.

15 years after their traumatic gingerbread-house incident, siblings Hansel and Gretel have become a formidable team of bounty hunters who track and kill witches all over the world.
