Ok so Terminator Salvation blasts onto UK cinema screen today and it comes six years after Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.

It is the fourth movie in the franchise and it's filmmaker McG that is in the director's chair and Christian Bale. not Arnie, that is the movie's driving force.

Bale takes on the role of John Connor, a character who has grown up into the leader of humanity as his mother predicted as the movies have progressed, so to celebrate the release of the film we take a look at those who have taken on the role.

When The Terminator was released back in 1984 there was no sign of the character John Connor as Arnie's cyborg was sent back to kill Sarah Connor before she could give birth to the man that would lead the resistance against Skynet.

We first caught a glimpse of humanity's leader in 1991, in the form of Edward Furlong, in Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

T2 is set ten years after the original and after Sarah Connor's brief relationship with Kyle Reese, who was sent from the future by John to protect his mother, Skynet's greatest fear was realised as John was born.

John has been being prepared for his destiny by his mother ever since he was born, being taught skills in weaponry, espionage and computer technology.

But after Sarah was placed in a mental institution John has been living with foster parents and is out of control.

Skynet once again try to wipe out the future threat by sending a T-1000 Terminator to the year 1995. But John Connor is once again one step ahead of the game as he sends a re-programmed T-800 to protect him.

Despite Furlong showing some interest in reprising the role of Connor in Rise of the Machines but the role went to Nick Stahl.

In T3 John is nineteen years old and has been living off the grid after the events of nine years ago. Once again Skynet are trying to quash the future threat but because John's whereabouts are unknown so they target future resistance officers.

But a second Terminator has been sent from the future to find and protect John, but this time sent by John's future wife Kate.

This time around it's Christian Bale who takes on the role as Skynet's biggest threat. But he is just one of many footsoldier that make up the resistance.

Despite having extensive prior knowledge of the machines and Skynet's capabilities, John is largely dismissed and considered a nuisance by General Ashdown who runs the guerrilla para-military organisation

The year is 2018 and the resistance and Skynet are at war. It would appear that Sarah's prediction has come true but Connor is concerned that he isn't, and cannot, become the man that his mother envisioned.

He has married Kate Brewster and she is carrying their first child. The film may only be released this week but there are already rumours that a fifth movie could be in the pipeline.
