The Wolfman

The Wolfman

Vampires may have dominated the big screen of late, yes I know that's all getting a little boring, but now it's time for the wolf to take centre stage.

Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt, Anthony Hopkins and Hugo Weaving all join forces for a remake of he 1941 classic The Wolfman.

So to celebrate the release of the movie we take a look at some of the best werewolf movies to have graced the big screen over the years.

An American Werewolf in London

Released back in 1981 An American Werewolf in London is the movie that many people think of when looking at this genre.

David Kessler and Jack Goodman (David Naughton and Griffin Dunne) are two American students on a backpacking tour of Europe. Wandering the backroads of gloomy East Proctor, England, they find a pub where the unhelpful locals act suspiciously strange.

The unsuspecting boys flee the pub in search of lodging after being warned to avoid the moors. Lost in the dark countryside, the pair is attacked by a werewolf. Only David survives, waking up three weeks later in a London hospital.

As David begins to regain his memory he is tormented by nightmares and is visited by his dead friend Jack, who warns David that he will turn into a werewolf with the next full moon--and that the only way to lift the curse is to kill himself.

Because the town of East Proctor has covered up the real cause of the murder, David is forced to face the truth alone.

Director Landis combined horror and comedy and this still remains a classic in this genre.

New Moon

The werewolf has got a twenty first century make-over in the past year as New Moon, the second of the Twilight novels to hit the big screen, was released.

First of all you had to decide if you were on Team Edward of Team Jacob as the vampire and the werewolf went head to head for the affections of a teenage girl.

Following Bella’s ill-fated 18th birthday party, Edward Cullen and his family abandon the town of Forks, Washington, in an effort to protect her from the dangers inherent in their world.

As the heartbroken Bella sleepwalks through her senior year of high school, numb and alone, she discovers Edward’s image comes to her whenever she puts herself in jeopardy. Her desire to be with him at any cost leads her to take greater and greater risks.

With the help of her childhood friend Jacob Black, Bella refurbishes an old motorbike to carry her on her adventures. Bella’s frozen heart is gradually thawed by her budding relationship with Jacob, a member of the mysterious Quileute tribe, who has a supernatural secret of his own.

When a chance encounter brings Bella face to face with a former nemesis, only the intervention of a pack of supernaturally large wolves saves her from a grisly fate, and the encounter makes it frighteningly clear that Bella is still in grave danger.

The film grossed over $700 million at the global box office and was one of the biggest movies of 2010. Eclipse is released this summer as the war between the vampires and the werewolves looks set to continue.

Teen Wolf

In the eighties Michael J Fox could do no wrong at the box office with the likes of Back To The Future under his belt.

Fox starred as Scott Howard, who thought he was an ordinary teenager. But he soon realized, he's anything but average.

The high school basketball player has noticed his body going through pretty odd physical changes.

Growing excessive hair on his hands, ears and back has made Scott a little nervous. But rather than fight these werewolf tendencies he's gonna make the most of them. Who knows, they might just make life at school a little easier

The Howling

Based on the novel by Gary Brandner Dee Wallace stars as Karen White, a popular female reporter in Los Angeles who cannot escape the horror of a traumatic experience that she suffered while trying to capture Eddie Quist (Robert Ricardo), a dangerous serial killer.

When her psychologist (Patrick Macnee) recommends a retreat to "The Colony," up the Northern California coast, she reluctantly agrees, hoping to recover from her nightmarish visions. Karen and her husband (Christopher Stone) arrive at the remote retreat and are shocked at the bizarre behaviour of the motley crew of residents.

Lurking in the ominous Northern California woods, blanketed by fog, strange sounds can be heard at night, luring the members of the retreat into the forest.

In anguish, Karen stumbles on the deadly secret of the community: when sexually excited, they turn into werewolves! The horrified journalist tries to escape from the retreat, battling the lair of leering lycanthropes in a fight for her life.

Other werewolf movies that are well worth a watch include Ginger Snaps, The Wolf Man (1941), The Curse of the Werewolf as well as appearing in Van Helsing and Underworld.

The Wolfman is out now.
