The King's Speech

The King's Speech

The King’s Speech awards momentum gathered pace this weekend after picking up more gongs at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The movie, which has been nominated for twelve Oscars including Best Picture and Best Actor for Colin Firth, walked away with the top prize - Outstanding Performance By A Cast In A Motion Picture.

The movie faced tough competition from Black Swan, the Fighter, The Kids Are All Right and The Social Network - all of which are Best Picture Oscar contenders, but walked away with another gong.

Colin Firth was once again making an acceptance speech as he picked up Best Actor for his role as King George VI in the movie.

He saw off competition from Jesse Eisenberg, Colin Firth, James Franco, Jeff Bridges and Robert Duvall and is now the runaway favourite for Oscar success in under a month’s time.

Natalie Portman added the Screen Actors Guild Award to her Golden Globe award for her performance in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan.

Portman is tipped to collect the Oscar and she beat off Annette Bening, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lawrence and Hilary Swank.

And there were no surprises in the supporting categories either as Christian Bale picked up another award for his role in The Fighter.

It was to be double glory for The Fighter, a real life tale which tells the rise of boxer ‘Irish’ Micky Ward, as Melissa Leo picked up Best Supporting Actress - beating co-star Amy Adams.
