Road movies have been popular on the big screen over the years with The Road the latest to enjoy success.

The movie is out on the DVD this week and to celebrate it's release we take a look at some of the best road movie.

1. The Road

An adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer prize-winning novel of the same name, The Road is set in post-apocalyptic age and sees a Father and Son battle their way across haunting terrain on a journey of survival.

With Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron and Guy Pearce, The Road is a Powerful and a must-see!

2. Thelma & Louise (1991)

Movie royalty from Ridley Scott sees Thelma and Louise - partners in crime take off in a 66’ Thunderbird pursuing a life of freedom.

Starring Susan Sarandon, Geena Davis and Brad Pitt we thought this well deserved a slot in our Top 10.

3. The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Undoubtedly a classic, with the wonderful Judy Garland, we couldn’t think of a better film which features a road trip.

Based on the book by L. Frank Baum, Dorothy and her gang make their way to visit the Wizard of OZ in the fantastic Emerald City. Follow the Yellow Brick Road!

4. Mad Max (1979)

With a very young Mel Gibson as the lead, the Mad Max series is set in an imagined future Australia. Max (Gibson) loses his family, and so goes about avenging their deaths by travelling by any which way possible, all the while dodging cannibals and criminals left right and centre.

The movie produced two sequels, the second film launching Gibson as a star in America as the movie enjoyed huge global success.

5. The Motorcycle Diaries (2004)

Starring Gael Garcia Bernal, The Motorcycle Diaries dramatises a journey inspired by Che Gevara’s memoirs. The film recounts an adventure he had with a friend across South America.

6. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)

Starring Johnny Depp, Benicio Del Toro and Cameron Diaz, Fear and Loathing is adapted by the novel by Hunter S. Thompson.

A psychopathic lawyer finds himself journeying to Las Vegas in search of psychedelic escapades and the American Dream.

7. Lord of the Rings (2001)

With Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Cate Blanchett and Ian McKellen, the epic trilogy, inspired by the books by Tolkien sees the small yet courageous hobbits battle against evil to destroy the ring to rule them all.

The movies went on to be one of the most successful movie franchises of all time, Return of the King, broke through the $1 billion barrier at the global box office.

And while both The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers were nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars it was Return of the King that walked away with the award, Peter Jackson also scooped Best Director. 

8. Gulliver’s Travels (Various)

Re-made several times for the big screen, and shortly to be remade again Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift follows Gulliver’s journey to the remoter nations of the world.

Gulliver is a trained surgeon and Ship Captain and travels for 16 years to various corners of the world.

Jack Black takes on the role of Gulliver in the latest adaptation of the movie directed by Rob Letterman.

9. The Hitcher (1986)

Directed by Robert Harmon starring Rutger Hauer and C. Thomas Howell, The Hitcher tells the chilling tale of a young man transporting a car to another state, who picks up a hitchhiker with a taste for murder.

10. Duel (1971)

Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Dennis Weaver, Duel sees a young driver being stalked by a psychopathic unseen truck driver. Adapted from the short story by Richard Matheson

The Road is released on Blu-ray & DVD on 17 May from Icon Home Entertainment
