We Need To Talk About Kevin

We Need To Talk About Kevin

2011 has already been a great year for British movies and we have another to get excited about this week in the form of We Need To Talk About Kevin.

We Need To Talk About Kevin marks the return to the big screen for Tilda Swinton as she teams up with filmmaker Lynne Ramsey.

She plays a grieving mother after her teenage son went on a high school killing spree.

To celebrate the release of these two movies we take a look at some of the Brit movies that have graced the big screen this year.

- Brighton Rock

Sadly Brighton Rock didn't get all the attention and plaudits that it should as Rowan Joffe brought the Graham Greene novel to the big screen.

Sam Riley lead the cast that also included Andrea Riseborough, Helen Mirren and John Hurt - and it has been one of the finest movies of the year.

Brighton Rock follows the young anti-hero Pinkie (Riley) as he tries to make his mark on the vicious gangland scene in Brighton.

Joffe has produced a really stylish, film noir esc type movie that continues the UK's tradition of producing great gangster movies.

- Tyrannosaur

Tyrannosaur marked the directorial debut of Paddy Considine - he also penned the fabulous screenplay.

Without a doubt this is a hard watch as Considine doesn’t shy away from the more brutal aspect of the story.

But it is the performance of the central actors Peter Mullan and Olivia Colman than really bring this movie to life as they have a really beautiful relationship on screen.

This is a great character study that looks at the effects that violence can have on us - inwardly in the case of Joseph and at the hands of others for Hannah.

Miss this movie at your peril!!!

- Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

A John le Carre movie was back on the big screen earlier this year in the form of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - which brought together one of the best Brit casts ever seen in a movie.

Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, John Hurt, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, benedict Cumberbatch, Toby Jones and Ciaran Hinds.

In the bleak days of the Cold War, espionage veteran George Smiley is forced from semi-retirement to uncover a Soviet agent within MI6's echelons.

Tinker Tailor Solider Spy is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the best political thrillers that I have had the privilege to watch - it hooks  you from the word and it really a very absorbing watch.

- Paul

It had been a while since we had seen Simon Pegg & Nick Frost team up for a movie but 2011 saw them back together for Paul.

This is one of the best comedy movies to grace the big this year as Pegg & Frost team up with Seth Rogen.

Ok so there is plenty to like about this movie Pegg and Frost, as you might imagine, banter well together and are perfect as Clive and Graeme as get a little more than what they bargained for on their alien hotspot road trip.

However when it comes to acting performances it's Seth Rogen who steals the show as the pot loving, foul mouthed Paul.

Rogen has one of those unmistakable voices and he brings the little green man to life as he brings a cheeky and carefree spirit to the movie.

- The Veteran

I have been a fan of Toby Kebbell for quite some time and he took on the central role in Matthew Hope's gritty The Veteran.

A soldier returning from the war in Afghanistan uncovers a conspiracy involving the intelligence services and a gang of drug dealers.

Kebbell carries the entire movie and gives a great performance as a soldier who is struggling to settle back into civilian life.

He is haunted by his military days, yet that side of his character is never fully explored; which would have brought another very interesting layer to the movie.

- Ironclad

Ironclad was another movie that I thoroughly enjoyed this year as James Purefoy has become somewhat of an action hero.

Directed by Jonathan English the movie see Purefoy lead a cast that includes Paul Giamatti, Brian Cox, Jason Flemyng, Kate Mara, Jamie Foreman.

For the faint hearted this movie is not as English has produced a very ruthless and very real movie as he spills blood left right and centre.

And while the cast are superb it's the unflinching action that really does make this movie putting the audience right in the heart of the battle.

We Need To Talk About Kevin is released 21st October.
