Kaya Scodelario

Kaya Scodelario

Wuthering Heights is one of the most popular novels of all time as well as one of the most adapted.

And this week Andrea Arnold is back in the director's chair to bring us her version of the Emily Bronte novel.

So to celebrate the release of the movie we take a look at some of the actresses who have play Cathy Earnshaw over the years.

Kaya Scodelario (2011)

For the new adaptation director Arnold has cast fairly unknown actors to take on these super famous characters.

Cathy Earnshaw is the first big leading role of Kaya after appearing in Clash of the Titans and Shank.

The film sees her star alongside James Howson as Heathcliff while Oliver Milburn and Nicholas Burley are also on the cast list,

And we are going to be seeing a lot more of Kaya in 2012 with work already completed on Twenty8k and Now Is Good.

Charlotte Riley (2009)

Wuthering Heights has not only been adapted for cinema but also for TV - 2009 being the last time that we saw it on the small screen.

Broadcast on ITV the series saw Riley team up with Tom Hardy, who played Heathcliff, in what was a sweeping adaptation of the novel.

Riley was superb as Cathy a woman torn between her love for Heathcliff and her loyalty to her husband.

Juliette Binoche (1992)

Until the release of Wuthering Heights this week the last time we saw this story on the big screen was back in 1992 when Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes took on the two central roles.

This story of a doomed love was heightened even further by the dark and brooding atmosphere that hung over the entire movie.

This was the first time that Binoche and Fiennes would work together in The English Patient.

Anna Calder-Marshall (1970)

Robert Fuest brought his version of the novel to the big screen in 1970 as Anna Calder-Marshall and Timothy Dalton teamed up as Cathy and Heathcliff.

Like a film from the thirties the movie only focused on the first sixteen chapters of the novel before closing with the death of Cathy - the problems their children face in the future are overlooked.

However the movie failed to attract audiences at the box office as there wasn't quite the chemistry between the central pair to set the film alight.

Colette Brettel (1920)

Even in the silent era Wuthering Heights made it onto the big screen as Colette Brettel took on the role of Cathy.

This film was one of the early adaptations of the novel and kicked off a TV & movie love for this story.
