X Men First Class

X Men First Class

X Men First Class is the newest instalment in Marvel’s X Men movie franchise, and with this one they are taking the story back to the beginning of Xavier’s and Magneto’s relationship.

Set in the 60’s First Class tells the origins of a number of new mutants, so before the movie is released, here is a quick run down of some of the characters you can expect.

Charles Xavier

James McAvoy is taking over from Patrick Stewart to play the younger and less confident version of Charles Xavier, sporting a full head of hair for this prequel.

Charles Xavier is a mutant whose powers manifest in his telepathic and psychic abilities, allowing him to telepathically communicate with people and to control their minds to a certain extent.

In this new movie Xavier can still walk, perhaps suggesting some light will be shed on why Xavier needs that iconic wheelchair.

Erik ‘Magneto’ Lehnsherr

Michael Fassbender is portraying Magneto in the new movie, a character who was the villain for the previous X Men films, the new release, First Class will show the complex relationship between Magneto and Xavier.

Magneto’s mutant ability is the power to control anything made of metal with his mind, meaning he can control vehicles, bullets and any weapons made from metal.

Previously portrayed by Sir Ian McKellen, Magneto was a victim of the Nazi concentration camps and sees his mutant powers as a way to control mankind, a theory which puts him at odds with Xavier.

Emma Frost

Emma Frost is one of the newer additions to the cast, with the character only having had a cameo near the end X Men Origins: Wolverine.

Portrayed by Mad Men star January Jones, Emma Frost is another psychic mutant, but with the ability to turn her skin into diamonds, making her practically invincible.

In the comics she was originally a villain, being a member of the hellfire club, though she later joined the X Men, so who knows where this film will leave her.

Dr Hank 'Beast' McCoy

Beast was previously in X Men 3 with actor Kelsey Grammar donning the blue furry suit, however First Class introduces to Hank McCoy before he turns all blue and fluffy, with Brit actor Nicolas Hoult taking over the role as young Hank.

Soft spoken but very intelligent, Hank is originally a scientist who is has animal like feet, but after taking a home made serum he becomes more animal like, sprouting blue hair all over his body and growing large sharp teeth.

In First Class, Hank has a relationship with fellow mutant, Mystique.

Raven 'Mystique Darkholme

This younger version of Mystique is being played by Jennifer Lawrence, and her mutant ability allows her to morph into the likeness of anyone she has met.

Her original form gives her the appearance of having rough blue skin.

Her character was a villain in the previous X Men trilogy, so expect this movie to explain how and why she left the X Men for Magneto’s Brotherhood.

Alex 'Havoc' Summers

Alex Summers is one of the original X Men and Scott Summers’ brother, Scott being popular X Men member Cyclops.

Whereas Scott can shoot plasma from his eyes, Alex’s mutant ability lets him shoot the plasma from anywhere on his body, making the power unwieldy, and also far more dangerous.

Havoc is a character not previously seen in the X Men films so we cant really say how big a part he will play, or when his brother joins the team.

X Men: First Class is released on 1 June.
