Sylvester Stallone in Bullet To The Head

Sylvester Stallone in Bullet To The Head

Throughout the eighties and nineties we have been treated to some of the greatest action actors to ever grace the big screen with the likes of Sylvester Stallone enjoying hugely successful career.

And Stallone is back on the big screen this week kicking some more ass in Bullet To The Head.

To celebrate his return we take a look at some of those actors who may be over fifty but are still showing the young guns in the genre how it is done.

Liam Neeson (60)

Liam Neeson has not always been known as an action star but he has become a surprise addition to this genre later in his career.

And you have to wonder why he hasn't really done more of these roles in past because it is a genre that does seem to fit well with him.

Taken, Taken 2, Unknown and The A-Team has seen him enjoy box office success with this genre - Taken being a particular highlight.

He is set to return to the action genre as he is currently filming Non-Stop - which will reunite him with his Unknown director Jaume Collet-Serra.

Bruce Willis (57)

Bruce Willis is one of the greatest action stars of all time and he has a whole host of action projects in the pipeline this year alone.

He may be fifty seven but that doesn't seen to slow him down as he is set to reprise the role of John McLane in A Good Day To Die Hard as well as star in Red 2 and G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

And this comes off the back of a busy period of films in this genre with Looper and The Expendables 2 over the last twelve months.

However it is the role of John McClane that will forever be synonymous with this actor and this genre as McClane is one of the greatest action heroes to ever grace the big screen.

Sylvester Stallone (66)

Of course we couldn't not mention Sly Stallone as he is back on the big screen this week with Bullet To The Head.

The movie is directed by Walter Hill and sees the actor take on the role of a hitman.

It has been all about the action roles in the last few years as he reprised the role of Rambo as well as kicked off a new franchise in the form of The Expendables - a franchise that is doing very nicely.

There is talk of a third film in the pipeline while Stallone has already completed work on The Tomb - which will also star Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Over the years Stallone has delivered some great action movies and created some memorable characters - and it doesn't look like he will be leaving this genre behind any time soon.

Arnold Schwarzenegger (65)

Arnie is another action OAP and now that his political career is over he is back on the big screen with a bang.

The Last Stand is his current film where he is whooping the ass of guys that are twenty and thirty years his junior.

And now that the actor is back it seems that it is action all the way as he has completed work on The Tomb and Ten while Unknown Soldier and a possible Terminator 5 are all in the pipeline.

Much like Stallone and Willis, Arnie is an actor who is synonymous with this genre with characters such as Conan and the Terminator being a staple of this genre.

Everyone may not be a fan of Schwarzenegger but it is good to see him back on the big screen doing what he does best.

Jean Claude Van Damme (52)

Jean Claude Van Damme is another actor who has enjoyed a long and successful career making action movies.

He has enjoyed success with the likes of Universal Solider, Double Impact and Timecop over the year and he returned to an action role last summer.

He joined the fantastic ensemble cast of The Expendables and showed that he still had it in the fighting department as he went head to head with Sly Stallone.

Jackie Chan (58)

Jackie Chan is a bit of a fave in the FemaleFirst office and he made a very successful transition from Asian cinema to U.S. movies.

His martial arts style brought something completely fresh to this genre and he found huge success with the likes of the Rush Hour series and Shanghai Knights.

Chan is a very different kind of action star and the fight scenes that he choreographs for his films really have set the screen alight over the years.

Steven Seagal and Dolph Lundgren are just two of the other stars who continue to work and find success in this genre.

It's been a while since we have seen Chan on the big screen but he has been linked to a role in The Expendables 3.

These action stars have had great and incredibly enduring careers and sadly the new generation of stars in this genre are not quite living up to what have gone before.

Bullet To The Head is released 1st February.
