This weekend it’s the 72nd British Academy Film Awards, airing on BBC One on Sunday, February 10 from 9pm. Joanna Lumley returns to hosting duties and, after looking at the nominees this year, it could be one of the closest-run series of categories in decades!

Looking at those who are up for the gongs, we came up with our own predictions of who might be walking away with the trophies this year...

BEST FILM: BLACKKKLANSMAN

BlacKkKlansman has had over 20 nominations for other awards this year, including the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards. Its closest competitor may be A Star Is Born, but we think it'll pull through and take home the night's most prestigious prize.

OUTSTANDING BRITISH FILM: BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

Bohemian Rhapsody was praised for its portrayal of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury and his life. There has however been a lot of negativity surrounding the flick from paid critics, so it could be a close call for the film to get a win this year in such a major category.

OUTSTANDING DEBUT BY A BRITISH WRITER, DIRECTOR OR PRODUCER: CHRIS KELLY FOR A CAMBODIAN SPRING

Chris Kelly wrote, produced and directed A Cambodian Spring and the movie looks incredible so it would be a surprise if he doesn’t get an award for his debut.

FILM NOT IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE: ROMA

This category was probably the hardest to decide but as Roma has received rave reviews and plenty of award nominations and wins already, it seems likely they’ll walk away with the award this time round.

DOCUMENTARY: THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD

Old footage from the First World War has been revived in this documentary and has been received greatly by reviewers, so we think director and producer Peter Jackson has this one locked down.

ANIMATED FILM: INCREDIBLES 2

The Incredibles has been a family favourite since its release in 2004, so when the sequel was announced people went crazy. It's received over a billion dollars at box office, showing that the appetite for more animated super-adventures is still as high as ever. The Isle Of Dogs is a close second.

DIRECTOR: BRADLEY COOPER FOR A STAR IS BORN

Bradley Cooper has been critically acclaimed for his direction of the movie. Critics have even said that his adaption of the story is the best one so far, so let's see him finally celebrated after missing out on an Oscars nod!

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: THE FAVOURITE

Another film with plenty of nominations this year and having won two awards at the world premier at Venice International Film Fest, it seems a sure thing that The Favourite will win an award.

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK

Also nominated for the same award at the Oscars, If Beale Street Could Talk has incredible acting and the screenplay has been the subject of much praise in reviews.

LEADING ACTRESS: OLIVIA COLMAN IN THE FAVOURITE

People have been speculating that Colman will win the BAFTA for Leading Actress ever since she starred in The Favourite. She has been nominated for multiple awards for her part in the film and took home the Volpi Cup at the world premiere at Venice Film Festival.

LEADING ACTOR: RAMI MALEK IN BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

Despite the film not receiving the best reviews, Malek’s acting has been nominated for plenty of awards for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in the biopic last year, and rightfully so. He's given one of the best performances not just of the past 12 months, but the last decade or so.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS: MARGOT ROBBIE IN MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS

In Mary Queen of Scots we see Margot Robbie like we’ve never seen her before. She is incredible in the film and definitely deserves the award this year.

SUPPORTING ACTOR: ADAM DRIVER IN BLACKKKLANSMAN

Driver received plenty of nominations for his role in BlacKkKlansman so it would make sense for him to win Supporting Actor this year.

ORIGINAL MUSIC: A STAR IS BORN

Lady Gaga’s incredible song Shallow has already been picking up awards, so let's hope the BAFTA for Original Music also goes her way.

CINEMATOGRAPHY AND EDITING: BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

Videos comparing the original Queen performances and the way they were portrayed in the film have been all over the media. The way they fit together seems enough to get Newton Thomas Sigel and John Ottoman the awards this Sunday.

PRODUCTION DESIGN: FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD

The sets used in the film are magical. Stuart Craig and Anna Pinnock smashed it and should receive the award this year. Mary Poppins Returns is another close contender.

COSTUME DESIGN: MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS

Alexandra Byrne did an amazing job with the costume design and the same can be said for Jenny Shircore who did the hair and makeup for the film.

SOUND: A QUIET PLACE

A Quiet Place isn’t really a film you’d expect to get awards for sound, as the title would suggest!  But, it uses sound effects in am amazing way and you can hear every creak of the floorboards as you sit on the edge of your seat, waiting for the next big scare.

SPECIAL VISUAL EFFECTS: FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD

Similar to the Production Design Award, the visual effects used for this film cannot be beaten. Or maybe it can? We’ll find out on Sunday night...

BRITISH SHORT ANIMATION: I'M OK

BRITISH SHORT FILM : WALE

RISING STAR: LETITIA WRIGHT

Wright’s acting in Black Panther is incredible and she deserves to be the BAFTA Rising Star this year. This award is the only one chosen by the public so it is difficult to know who's going to be on everybody's radar!
