A rain shower can have a powerful effect on a movie scene. Depending on the mood, a heavy downpour can create passion, desperation, intensity and sadness. It’s particularly effective when the actors are half-clothed, something we discovered upon viewing Chris Hemsworth in Bad Times at the El Royale, which is in cinemas nationwide from Friday October 12. To celebrate the release, we’re taking a look at the best film scenes that take place in the rain.

Four Weddings and a Funeral

Although Andie MacDowell’s delivery of the line “It’s still raining, I hadn’t noticed”, is often criticised, the rain scene between her and Hugh Grant has become a romantic classic. Despite a small budget, the film became a huge success thanks to Richard Curtis’ charming screenplay and bumbling, British characters.

The Notebook

Winning the award for the heaviest downfall, in this Notebook scene Ally (Rachel McAdams) demands to know why Noah (Ryan Gosling) didn’t write to her. Noah tells her he wrote to her every day for a year, then follows with the classic quote, “It wasn’t over. It still isn’t over.” Then the pair share a passionate kiss in the torrential rain.

Blade Runner

In the climax of the classic sci-fi film Blade Runner, we can see the powerful “Tears in Rain” monologue delivered by Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer), which was improvised by Hauer the night before filming. With the heavy rain adding intensity, the character’s final words went down in cinema history.

Breakfast at Tiffany's

Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard star in one of the best kiss scenes of all time. After an argument between the two, Holly (Hepburn) goes out in the rain to look for Paul (Peppard) and her pet cat. When they’re finally reunited they share a passionate embrace (and slightly squash the cat in the process).

The Crow

After a tragic, accidental death during filming, super-hero film The Crow features Brandon Lee’s final film performance. In a rainy, dark alley, his character Eric delivers the iconic line, “It can’t rain all the time”.

Bad Times at the El Royale is in UK cinemas from October 12, 2018.
