With cinemas set to reopen in some areas across the UK (those in Tier 2 or below), and plenty of new content coming to our favourite streaming platforms, we got to thinking about all of the best new movies that will be dropping in December 2020.
There are a whole host of different genres hoping to showcase some cinematic gems, so we’ve picked out our top six that we’re most excited about seeing!
Mank, released December 4th 2020 on Netflix
Directed by David Fincher and based on a script by his father Jack Fincher, Mank stars Gary Oldman in the leading, titular role in a biographical film that has already received rave reviews from critics lucky enough to see it early.
The story centres on famed writer Jerman J. Mankiewicz, who was responsible for Citizen Kane, as well as the problems that arose leading up to the movie's release with Orson Welles, played here by Tom Burke.
Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins and Tuppence Middleton are also amongst the cast, in what we're sure will be a movie that's talked about for many years to come.
Monster Hunter, released December 4th 2020 in UK cinemas
Based on the much-loved global video game series of the same name, Monster Hunter follows the story of Captain Artemis (Milla Jovovich) and her unit of soldiers who travel to a new world following an unexpected sandstorm. When there, they're shocked to discover that the land is inhabited by enormous, terrifying monsters that are immune to regular firepower.
A battle for survival unlike any we’ve seen before, Monster Hunter has all the right ingredients to be one of the few big screen video game adaptations that are actually good! Jovovich's history of leading the Resident Evil film series puts her in the perfect position to help make this flick a major success.
Wonder Woman 1984, released December 16th 2020 in UK cinemas
Gal Gadot returns as the titular superhero, with Patty Jenkins once again sitting in the director’s chair for this highly-anticipated DC Extended Universe sequel. Kristen Wiig makes her DCEU debut as the villainous Cheetah, with Pedro Pascal also playing an adversary to Wonder Woman in the form of Max Lord.
Having written the screenplay alongside Geoff Johns and David Callaham, and the story with Johns, Jenkins is sure to deliver yet another memorable adventure for the beloved Amazonian warrior.
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, released December 18th 2020 on Netflix
The late Chadwick Boseman stars in his final film here, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which also stars big names including Viola Davis, Glynn Turman, Colman Domingo, Michael Potts, Jonny Coyne, Taylour Paige, Jeremy Shamos, Dusan Brown and Joshua Harto.
Taking place over the course of an afternoon recording session in 1920s Chicago, tensions arise when the 'Mother of the Blues', Ma Rainey (Davis) is late for the session; instead engaging in a battle of wills with her white management over control of her music.
Celebrating the transformative power of music and the blues in particular, this film is a showcase of the artists who refuse to allow society's prejudices dictate their worth.
The Midnight Sky, released December 23rd 2020 on Netflix
Directed by and starring George Clooney, The Midnight Sky tells a post-apocalyptic story in which Augustine (Clooney) races to stop a group of astronauts from returning to Earth, after a mysterious global catastrophe.
Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, Tiffany Boone, Demián Bichir and Kyle Chandler all also star, with the film set to introduce new actor Caoilinn Springall.
It's gonna be one heck of a rollercoaster for the characters involved and audiences alike.
Soul, released December 25th 2020 on Disney+
Disney Pixar’s upcoming release was in limbo for a while, before Disney decided that it should make its premiere on Christmas Day, exclusively on their streaming platform Disney+.
Directed by Pete Docter with co-director Kemp Powers, both of who served as writers with Mike Jones, the film stars the voices of Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Questlove, Phylicia Rashad, Daveed Diggs and Angela Bassett.
Foxx voices lead character Joe Gardner, a middle school music teacher who has dreamed for as long as he can remember of performing jazz music in front of live audiences. He finally gets an opportunity to do just that, but when a tragic accident strikes, his soul is separated from his body and begins its journey to the Great Beyond.
An emotional story for sure, that’s going to be one for all the family to watch before the New Year comes around.
