Though we’re currently in the midst of an incredibly surreal time, that doesn’t mean we need to sit in our bedrooms in complete darkness, hiding away from the world in silence until we’re told we can come back outside. For many, this will be the perfect opportunity to check out a whole host of different films they’ve been meaning to check out for years, but never had the chance to watch. If you’re strong enough for it, and if pandemic/virus movies are your thing, then we’ve got seven stellar suggestions for you to get through…

7. The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

You can't talk about catastrophic pandemic movies without mentioning 2004's The Day After Tomorrow. When the North Atlantic Ocean's circulation is disrupted, it leads to a series of extreme weather events that bring in a new ice age, halting humanity's usual peace and prosperity, and forcing them to learn to adapt all over again.

6. 28 Days Later (2002)

You may know Cillian Murphy from Peaky Blinders if you've never seen 28 Days Later, but those who did check out the film upon its release all the way back in 2002. The narrative follows a complete breakdown in societal norm following an accidental release of a quick-spreading virus, and focuses in on a group of four who are trying to survive against the odds as the world goes to hell in a handbasket.

5. The Happening (2008)

M. Night Shyamalan is renowned for bringing some of the most impressive thrillers to the big screen, and his 2008 release The Happening is arguably one of his best. Starring Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel, as well as John Leguizamo and Betty Buckley, the film follows the group of four as they battle to escape the deadly consequences of an unexplained natural disaster.

4. World War Z (2013)

Based on Max Brook's novel of the same name, World War Z sees Brad Pitt star as former United Nations investigator Gerry Lane, who's tasked with travelling the world in a bid to stop a zombie pandemic. Films focusing on the living dead are a dime a dozen, but this is one that’s absolutely worth the two-hour run-time.

3. Contagion (2011)

Steven Soderbergh sits in the director's chair for Contagion, which brings an all-star cast together including Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Winslet. Exploring the loss of status quo and social order in a pandemic, the movie sees a virus transmitted by inanimate objects quickly and violently through the human population.

2. I Am Legend (2007)

Based on Richard Matheson's 1954 novel of the same name, I Am Legend stars Will Smith as US Army virologist Robert Neville who becomes the last human in New York following the outbreak of a virus. Turning mankind into mutants that lash out whenever they're confronted with humanity, he must traverse the dangerous landscape in the hope of finding a cure.

1. Bird Box (2018)

Sandra Bullock leads one of Netflix’s most entertaining and intense original movies in Bird Box. The film sees a mysterious pathogen spread through America, causing anybody who looks it in the eye to die – usually through taking their own life. Those hoping to survive must learn to navigate this new post-apocalyptic world with their eyes covered, leading to an incredibly dangerous journey from the madness to a place of sanctuary for Bullock's character, and the children who have joined her.
