Oz The Great And Powerful

Iron Man 3 hit the big screen this time last week and cinema tills have been ringing around the globe as the movie has stormed the international box office.

And with Star Trek Into Darkness and Man of Steel the other huge blockbusters that are just around the corner it looks like we are going to be seeing quite a few movies making a lot of money this summer.

But there have already been some box office successes so far this year so we take a look at the biggest grossing movies to date.

1. Oz The Great and Powerful - $482.7m

In 2013 Oz The Great and Powerful is the biggest grossing movie so far as it has taken just over $482 million during it's theatrical run.

The movie was a prequel to the much loved Wizard of Oz and saw Sam Raimi return to the director's chair.

James Franco, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz and Mila Kunis were all on the cast list and there is already talk of a second film.

The movie topped the box office in both the U.S. and the UK has been thrilling families since it was released back in March.

2. The Croods - $468.2m

There have been some great animation movies that have hit the big screen so far this year but The Croods has had the biggest box office success.

The Croods was the latest project from Dreamworks Animation and came hot off the heels of Rise of the Guardians.

Kirk DeMicco and Chris Sanders were in the director's chair while Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds and Catherine Keener all lent their voices to the film.

So far the film has grossed just over $468 million and has topped the box office in the U.S. and the UK - it enjoyed at three week run as #1 here in the UK.

With a hit like that on their hands it should come as no surprise to hear that Dreamworks have a sequel in the pipeline.

3. G.I. Joe: Retaliation - $402.8m

G.I. Joe: Retaliation is just one of the action movies we have been treated to so far this year - but it is the one that has done the business at the box office so far.

The movie comes four years after G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra but this time around the movie got the 3D treatment.

Action director Jon M. Chu was at the helm this time around while Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis were some of the big name additions to the cast list.

Despite filing to win over the critics the movie has been thrilling audiences as it has taken over $402 million and topped the U.S. chart.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation

4. Iron Man 3 - $307.7m

Iron Man 3 has only been on release for a week and it is already the fourth biggest film of the year so far.

The film has taken a cool $307.7 million in just seven days and looks on course to be a mammoth hit - it is yet to be released in America.

Robert Downey Jr is back as Tony Stark while Shane Black is in the director's chair this time around.

But what will become of the Iron Man franchise? Downey Jr is out of contract and it uncertain at the moment if there will be a fourth film.

This is two huge hits for Marvel on the bounce as Iron Man 3 comes a year after the $1.5 billion success of Avengers Assemble.

5. A Good Day To Die Hard - $302.4m

A Good Day To Die Hard is the fifth instalment of the action franchise and comes six years after Die Hard 4.

This time around we see John McClane team up with his son Jack to kick bad guy ass. The movie saw Bruce Willis was back while Jai Courtney landed the biggest role of his career to date as Jack.

A Good Day to Die Hard was another movie that struggled with the critics but it did net just over $302 million and topped the U.S. and UK box office.

And there is believed to be another film in the pipeline.

So far it has been a great year at the box office and with Star Trek Into Darkness, Fast and Furious 6, Man of Steel, The Wolverine and Pacific Rim all still to come it really is going to be a bumper summer.
