Birdman

Birdman

The countdown to the Oscars is well and truly on as the nominations were announced in Hollywood earlier today, with Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel both picked up nine nods each - including Best Picture.

There will be eight films in the running for Best Picture this year, as Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel are joined by American Sniper, Boyhood, The Imitation Game, Selma, and The Theory of Everything. After the Golden Globes on Sunday, it looks like Birdman and Boyhood could be set to battle it out for the biggest prize in film.

Birdman has been a major tip for Oscar success for some time and it also picked up nominations in Best Actor for Michael Keaton, Best Supporting Actress for Emma Stone, Best Supporting Actor for Edward Norton, and Best Director for Alejandro González Inárritu.

And the Best Director category looks set to be one of the most difficult to call as Inárritu is joined by Richard Link later (Boyhood), Bennett Miller (Foxcatcher), Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel) and Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) - it was Linlater who triumphed at the Golden Globes at the weekend.

It looks set to be a two horse race for Best Actor, as Keaton will go head to head with Eddie Redmayne as the Brit was nominated for his performance in The Theory of Everything - both walked away with a Best Actor Golden Globe at the weekend. Steve Carell, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Bradley Cooper are all also in the mix.

Bradley Cooper was the surprise inclusion in the Best Actor line-up having been overlooked at the Golden Globes and SAGs. This is a third Oscar nomination for Cooper in as many years having picked up a Best Supporting Actor nomination in 2014 for American Hustle and a Best Actor nomination in 2013 for Silver Linings Playbook.

American Sniper is the film that really did surprise everyone this afternoon, as it picked up six nominations, despite being largely overlooked by the other awards ceremonies. However, there was disappointment for Selma as the Martin Luther King drama only managed two nominations. It picked up nods for Best Picture and Best Song but David Oyelowo and Ava DuVernay missed out for Best Actor and Best Director.

There was also a big surprise in the Best Actress category as Jennifer Aniston was overlooked for her career defining performance in Cake. Aniston has been winning rave reviews for her most recent performance and was nominated for Best Actress at the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. However, the Oscars have overlooked the performance in favour of Marion Cotillard in Two Days, One Night.

Julianne Moore (Still Alice), Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) and Reese Witherspoon (Wild) make up the Best Actress category - Moore is the favourite to scoop the award for her performance as a woman with early onset Alzheimer’s.

There was more good new for the Brits in the Best Supporting Actress category as Keira Knightly picked up the second nomination for her career for The Imitation Game. She is nominated alongside Patricia Marquette (Boyhood), Laura Dern (Wild), Emma Stone (Birdman), and Meryl Streep (Into The Woods).

Golden Globe winner J.K Simmons leads the Best Supporting Actor category with his performance in Whiplash, and will do battle with Mark Ruffalo (Foxcatcher), Edward Norton (Birdman), Robert Duvall (The Judge) and Ethan Hawke (Boyhood).
