There weren't too many surprises in this year's Academy Award nominations, but a few moments did raise eyebrows across the world. Bradley Cooper's exclusion from the Best Director category for example has set social media on fire, whilst Crazy Rich Asians missing out completely has been labelled a travesty. Here are those moments and some of the other biggest shocks from this year's Oscar nominations...

Bradley Cooper misses out on a Best Director nod

Though his film A Star Is Born picked up eight nominations in total for this year's Oscars, Cooper himself missed out on being given the nod he deserved in the Best Director category. That's not something that gives fans of the film the greatest encouragement that it's in serious contention to take home the Best Picture prize.

Cooper has without a doubt done incredible things with his directorial debut. His snubbing from the category is the biggest shock of the year, as the Oscars in the past have enjoyed celebrating those who move behind the camera after spending the majority of their career leaving the director's chair to somebody else.

We doubt the snub is going to put Cooper off directing entirely in the future but still, it must have been quite the blow not to see his name amongst his peers.

It's been widely-rumoured to pick up a Best Picture category nod for some time, but actually seeing a superhero film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe in amongst some of the year's biggest flicks is still a huge shock. Does it deserve inclusion, or are the Academy Award judges simply giving it a push to appease audiences following the #OscarsSoWhite controversy?

We'd go with the former! An incredibly talented group of actors and behind-the-scenes crew came together for an MCU entry that broke the usual formula, pushed against preset boundaries and stunned the world. Whether or not it can go all the way and claim the gong is however another matter entirely.

Despite the huge love for Crazy Rich Asians upon its release, the Academy Awards haven't given it a single nomination this year. Though it impressed the Screen Actors Guild Awards judges enough to score a nomination for arguably their biggest award (Best Ensemble Cast), it's not made any waves here.

A shame, as Constance Wu should certainly be amongst the Best Actress nominations...

We knew Roma would do well and expected a handful of nominations for The Favourite, but to see the latter tie with the former and gain an incredible 10 chances of taking home Academy Awards is a real sight to behold.

Olivia Colman is without a doubt one of the most awe-inspiring British stars of the modern day. Hopefully she and the film will be showered with wins come February, and us Brits can continue to celebrate just how good our homegrown talent really is!

The film about James Bulger's killers (Detainment) earns a nomination

When James Bulger's real parents came forward to slam Detainment and urged the Academy Award judges not to give it a nomination and chance of winning a prize at this year's event, we thought their pleas would be heard and it would be excluded.

Instead, the film actually made the shortlist in the Best Live Action Short Film category which led to Bulger's mother Denise Fergus to tweet the statement above. The controversy surrounding this one shows no signs of slowing down...

Green Book doesn't do as well as expected

Directed by Peter Farrelly and starring the brilliant Mahershala Ali alongside Viggo Mortensen and Linda Cardellini, Green Book tells the true story of Tony Lip (Mortensen) who goes from a life as an Italian-American bouncer to a chauffeur for highly-educated African-American classical pianist Dr. Don Shirley (Ali), all against the backdrop of 1962 America.

The movie has been an early hit this awards season, but didn't pick up quite as many nominations for the Oscars as would have been expected.

It's found itself picking up nods for Best Picture, Best Actor (Mortensen), Best Supporting Actor (Ali), Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing, but was strangely absent from both Best Director (which doesn't bode well for its chances in Best Picture), and Best Supporting Actress.

Hopefully it can come away from February's ceremony with a prize or two, but it might end up missing out altogether being up against such strong competition.

The 91st Academy Awards take place on February 25, 2019.
