Luke Evans

Luke Evans

Over the last couple of years we have seen a whole host of British actor break through and start to make a name for themselves in the UK as well as in the U.S.

The likes of Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston have really paved the way for the next army of Brit actors to land bigger and bigger roles.

We take a look at some of the actors who are following in their footsteps and who we need to keep an eye on over the next couple of years.

- Richard Armitage

The role of Thorin Oakenshield really has been the breakout film role of Richard Armitage; he took on the part for the first time at the end of 2012.

He returns this week as The Desolation of Smaug hits the big screen and he reunites with director Peter Jackson.

Armitage really does own the role of Thorin and the franchise will come to a spectacular conclusion; the third film will contain some big moments for this character.

Away from The Hobbit, Armitage has also completed work on Into The Storm; which is the second feature film for director Steven Quale.

- Luke Evans

2013 has been a big movie year for Luke Evans as he has enjoyed box office success with Fast & Furious 6 and will be appearing in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

He will take on the role of Bard The Bowman in The Hobbit as we are introduced to this character for the first time.

Evans has been making name for himself of the last few years, but he has some exciting projects on the horizon.

He has completed work on Dracula Untold, where he will play Vlad Tepes, and will be on the small screen in The Great Train Robbery.

He is also going to be taking over the role of Eric Draven as The Crow is remade by director F. Javier Gutiérrez.

- Ben Whishaw

This week has bee a huge week for Ben Whishaw as it was announced that he has landed the role of Freddie Mercury in a new biopic about the Queen frontman.

Whishaw enjoyed huge box office success at the end of last year when he was introduced as Q in Skyfall; while he has had a long film history it was the movie that really put him on the map.

This year we have seen in him Cloud Atlas and he has completed work on Lilting and Days and Nights.

And there are plenty of projects on the horizon for Whishaw as he is currently filming In the Heart of the Sea and looks set to return for Bond 24.

- Theo James

A British that you may not be very familiar with is Theo James, but he is set to blast on to the big screen next year in Divergent.

Divergent is the adaptation of the novel of the same name by Veronica Roth, where he will take on the role of Four.

While James is no stranger to the big screen, Divergent is set to be the biggest movie of his career and will send his star rocketing.

He has also completed work on Franny and is currently filming London Fields. London Fields will see him team up with Amber Heard, Jaimie Alexander and Jim Sturgess.

- Jamie Dornan

Jamie Dornan has made his name in television with roles in the likes of The Fall and Once Upon A Time in recent years.

But he is about to see him world turn upside down after landing the role of Christian Grey in the big screen adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey.

Filming has got underway on the highly anticipated film as he teams up with Dakota Johnson and director Sam Taylor-Wood.

Sadly, for Dornan fans the film has been pushed back from August 2014 to February 2015. However, it looks set to be the film that really will kick start his film career.

- Douglas Booth

Douglas Booth returned to the big screen earlier this year as he took on the role of Romeo in Romeo & Juliet. While the young actor has enjoyed most of his acting success on TV, all that looks set to change.

He has a host of exiting projects coming up... kicking off with the highly anticipated Noah. The movie sees Darren Aronofsky return to the director's chair, while Russell Crowe takes on the title role.

Booth will make up an all star supporting cast alongside Emma Watson, Jennifer Connelly, Anthony Hopkins and Logan Lerman.

He has also completed work on Jupiter Ascending and Posh, and is currently working on Geography of the Heart.

Other British actors to watch out for include Jeremy Irvine, Jack O'Connell and Charlie Hunnam.
