Captain Phillips

Captain Phillips

Captain Phillips is one of the most wonderful movies that I have seen in 2013 - if you haven't checked it out yet, I urge you to do so.

Captain Phillips has made it to number three in our Best Movies of 2013, in what was a closely fought battle for the top spot.

The movie marked the return of Paul Greengrass to the director's chair for the first time since Green Zone, as he teams up with double Oscar winner Tom Hanks for the first time.

The movie tells the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.

Tom Hanks takes on the title role, in what is the best performance that we have seen from him in quite a few years.

Hanks gives a very human portrayal of Richard Phillips; he is an ordinary man who is thrown into an extraordinary situation.

Hanks shows the fear that Phillips clearly has, but there is also a steely determination to protect the rest of the men on the ship.

It is the work of Hanks that make this movie unforgettable - that final scene is powerful stuff and really will move you to tears. That scene alone deserves Hanks to get a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his performance.

I have always been a big fan of Paul Greengrass, and it is fantastic to see him back in the director's chair - this really is one of his best movies.

Greengrass really puts the audience through the ringer with this movie, as he builds the tension and the atmosphere with every scene.

From start to finish an air of danger looms over this movie, and that unease never disappears for a single moment; that is an impressive thing to be able to maintain for a full 134 minutes.

Captain Phillips has well and truly raised the bar when it comes to true-life action thrillers, as Greengrass and co have delivered a tense, emotional, and horrowing story.

Captain Phillips looks set to be a major player this awards season, and it deserves to pick up some gongs along the way.
