Mulligan is one of the most talented British actresses around and it is always exciting to see a new project of hers on the horizon. She was on the red carpet in London this week for the premiere of Far From The Madding Crowd.

The actress stunning in a strapless glittery gown as she spent time with fans and laughed with the press and photographers outside the BFI in London.

She was joined on the red carpet by co-star Matthias Schoenaerts and director Thomas Vinterberg:

Mulligan is set to take on the role of independent heroine Bathsheba Everdene as she teams up with filmmaker Vinterberg for the first time. Vinterberg has been behind films such as Submarino and What A Men Comes Home during his career, but this is the first film from him since the success of The Hunt back in 2012.

David Nicholls is also aboard the project having adapted the much-loved Hardy novel into a screenplay. This is not the first time he has adapted an iconic piece of literature, having penned the screenplay for Great Expectations and the TV mini-series Tess of the D'Urbervilles,

A great cast has been assembled for the film, as Mulligan and Schoenaerts are joined by Michael Sheen, Tom Sturridge and Juno Temple.

Schoenaerts is one of the actors to watch out for over the next couple of years as he has started to make a name for himself with roles in Rust and Bone, The Drop, Suite Française, and A Little Chaos.

Far From The Madding Crowd is the story of independent, beautiful, and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching wilfulness; Frank Troy (Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor.

This timeless story of Bathsheba's choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love - as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance.

We have already been treated to a couple of period dramas already this year, but Far From The Madding Crowd looks set to be a real treat if you are a big fan of this genre.

Far From The Madding Crowd is released 1st May.
