The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

2013 was a fantastic year for women at the box office as Hollywood has finally realised that they are a major box office draw.

Not only have wee see a whole host of actresses leading cast lists but it has also been in a multitude of genres including big budget blockbuster, comedy, science fiction, lamination and drama.

We take a look at some of the female-led movies that have not only lit up the big screen in 2013, but have also brought in the cast.

- The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is the highest grossing female-led movie of 2013 - which will come as no surprise.

Jennifer Lawrence was back in the central role of Katniss Everdeen in what was one of the most anticipated films of the year: the actress gives another terrific performance in this central role.

And Catching Fire did not disappoint as it took on a darker tone, as well as tackling some of the more political themes of the book including the struggle, the difficulties and the horrors that face people living in the districts of Panem.

Catching Fire went on to be a box office smash and is the third highest grossing movie of the year behind Iron Man 3 and Despicable Me 2.

It took over $795.1 million - surpassing the success of its predecessor - and setting up what will be the huge success of the final two instalments.

- Gravity

It is not that often that we see a woman lead a science fiction film, but Gravity was the movie that bucked that trend in 2013.

Gravity was one of the most praised movies of the year as Alfonso Cuaron returned to the director's chair and Sandra Bullock took on the central role of Dr Ryan Stone.

The movie followed two astronauts stranded in space when a routine space walk goes wrong.

While this is a film set in the expanse - not to mention the beauty - of space, this is a personal and intimate story of loss and the will to survive.

Bullock gives another terrific performance as a grieving mother, and it is her story that really does give this movie a lot of heart.

Gravity went on to gross over $653 million worldwide. Gravity and Bullock's performance will be major contenders for gongs this awards season.

- Frozen

Women have also been ruling the box office in the animation genre as well as Disney's Frozen has enjoyed huge critical and box office success.

The movie is loosely based on the Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale The Snow Queen, and follows the relationship and love that two sisters have for one another: a theme that Disney had not yet tackled.

Not only did Frozen feature two strong female protagonists, but Frozen also made history behind the camera... Jennifer Lee became the first women to ever direct a Disney movie as she teamed up with Chris Buck.

So far the movie has grossed over $500 million worldwide and is the third movie successful Disney movie of all time behind The Lion King and Tangled.

- The Heat

Sandra Bullock enjoyed not one, but two huge box office successes in 2013... she, of course starred in The Heat.

The comedy saw Bullock team up with Melissa McCarthy for the first time, as an FBI Special Agent and a Boston Detective who are paired together to bring down the bad guy.

The Heat saw Bullock and McCarthy at their comic best, and the movie went on to be both a critical and commercial hit.

The movie took over $229 million worldwide and is the second highest grossing comedy of the year behind We're The Millers.

2012 was a fantastic year for female driven projects with the likes of The Hunger Games, Brave, Snow White and the Huntsman and Prometheus all big box office success - it is great to see 2013 follow in its footsteps.

The likes of Philomena, Blue Jasmine, Saving Mr Banks and The Croods have all also enjoyed critical and commercial success over the last twelve months.

Here's hoping that 2014 will produce plenty more female-driven projects.
